Did you know that… • An estimated 6 billion to 9 billioncondoms are distributed every year. (6.000.000.000) • Let’s have a look who uses condoms around the world!
Introduction • Worldwide, condom use differs a lot from region to region and from one country to the other … • While worldwide 5 percent of married women (of reproductive age) report using condoms… • In some countries more than 10 percent of married couples rely on condoms!!!
Some figures….. An estimated 44 million married couples use condoms for family planning worldwide! • Percentage of all couples in which the wife is of reproductive age using condoms for Family Planning (2003): • Mauritius 13.3% • Botswana 11.2% • South Korea 15.1% • Singapore 22.0% • Tanzania 2.7%
Some figures… • For partners outside the married couple condom use is even higher! • Latvia: over two-thirds use condoms ! • Mexico: Male 63% (1997) • Paraguay: Female 79% (1996)
Let’s have a look at Germany • 201 Millions of Condoms were sold in 2002. • 2/3 of German youth use condoms the first time they have sex! • The most used contraceptives in Germany are the condom and the pill: 36% of Germans using contraceptives rely on the condom and 55% report using the pill.
Germany • The high social acceptance of the condom is furthered by information and advertisement campaigns run by the German government. • The last information campaign was called “don’t give AIDS a chance.” • It was a success as an estimated 25.000 new HIV infections were prevented.
Let’s have a look at the Netherlands • Young people nowadays receive wide ranging information and education on sexuality and relationships.
The Netherlands Contraceptive use of young people : In 2000 sexually active youth: • 68 % systematically used condoms • 27% systematically used condoms and pills • 31% sometimes used condoms • 17% never used condoms
Let’s have a look at Japan… • Japanese have a long history of Condom use… • They invented the 'Kawagata' or 'Kyotai‘ which was made of thin leather and the 'Kabutogata‘ which was made from tortoiseshell or horn. • Nowadays, the condom enjoys a high social acceptance in Japan and there is little stigma attached to it.
Japan • In addition, Japanese law has been prohibiting the use of the pill for family planning for the last 30 years • Japan is home to almost one-fifth of all married condom users worldwide • 46% of all couples, or 78% of all family planning users, rely on condoms
China • The Chinese government promotes the use of contraceptives in the light of the one-child policy which aims at controlling the population size. • Many Chinese couples use condoms regularly. • Let’s have a look at a Chinese condom advertisements.
And let’s have a look at Thailand • In the early 1980s, HIV/AIDS was perceived as a foreigner’s disease. • But when the number of infected surged to nearly 300,000 in 1990, HIV/AIDS became a national priority and a huge information campaign was launched by the Ministry of Health.
Thailand • Condom use was made mandatory for commercial sex workers and their clients, the “100% condom programme”! • The programme had strong political commitment from the government, health workers, NGOs, the media, brothel owners and the public!
Thailand • Condom use in brothels rose from 14% in 1988 to 95% in 1995. • HIV infections are estimated to have decreased by more than 80% by 2002!
Condom promotion • Condoms are promoted all over the world to enhance health and prevent unwanted pregnancies…
Conclusion • Condoms are used worldwide • …on all 5 continents!!!!!
