Small Business Innovation Research Passively Q-Switched Microchip LaserQ-Peak, Inc.Bedford MA • INNOVATION • Developed compact, reliable, solid state microchip-based laser transmitter for satellite laser ranging featuring: • Low-energy microchip laser producing very short pulses. • Efficient, transversely diode-pumped, multipass Nd:YVO4 amplifier for two order-of-magnitude increase in pulse energy. ACCOMPLISHMENTS • Achieves laser energy, pulsewidth, and repetition rate goals of SLR 2000 and meets current eye-safety standards. • Uses passively Q-switched microchip laser technology which provides low maintenance and failsafe reliability. • Transmitter prototype was developed, delivered, and tested in NASA GSFC SLR 2000 satellite ranging system. COMMERCIALIZATION • Commercial customer is funding further development for application to metrology product. 440 ps pulse duration • GOVERNMENT/SCIENCE/APPLICATIONS • Ruggedized, conductively cooled, fully automated SLR 2000 Field transmitter based on this technology is now under development in NASA Phase III Contract.
