Wichita's were the first people of Oklahoma. The Wichita’s descended from the Plains Village Farmers. • The Wichita’s mainly farmed, but for six weeks the entire village left to hunt buffalo. • Economy was good because of hunting and farming. • They Seldom suffered from lack of food…
The Wichita's • Lived in small villages • Generally fought wars for revenge, not conquest • Captives were treated cruel, sometimes eaten • In 15th century, other Indians began to move into Oklahoma.
Wichitas • Farming- • (corn, beans, squash, gourds, and tobacco) • Hunting- • (Bison, deer, elk, antelope, rabbit, and squirrel) • Settlements- • (Brush arbors, and Tepee came later)
Wichita's Continued • Social Structure- • Traced family heritage through the women • Each house was 10-12 persons the wife mother, and sisters, husbands, kids etc. • For advice boys went to their mothers brother not their own DAD. • Children always took there mothers clan
Wichita's cont. • Religion: • Creative forces in the universe directed the destiny of individuals and tribes. • The “Corn Dance”- • Took place when corn crop ripened in the summer. • Tribal members fasted and cleansed in preparation • Started with the lighting of the fire, the old fire had become polluted as people broke the rules of the village.
Other Indians • 500 years Later the Apaches moved into the western part of Oklahoma in search of buffalo. • The Lipan Apaches were caused to move their villages to Texas because of warfare. • The Kiowa Apaches remained in Oklahoma
Comanches became masters of the Southern Plains because of their horsemanship. • In the 1740’s, Comanches and Wichita's agreed to a truce that brought peace for both. • Later, the Comanches moved south and the Osages gained control of the Wichita's homeland by constant warfare that lasted a century. • By 1800- All Wichita's left Oklahoma
