Principles of Computer Operations The central processing unit (CPU), or processor, executes the instructions contained in the program according to the logical sequence or algorithm determined by the programmer. The central processor is usually composed of an arithmetic-logic unit (ALU), which performs the calculations, and a control unit, which manages the execution sequence of the program instructions.
