Welcome to Geocoding using ArcGIS the Third of a Monthly Series onGeographic Information Systems (GIS) Presented by: The Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health, Office of Public Health Informatics and Epidemiology in Partnership with the Nevada Primary Care Association
Course Goals/Objectives: • Basics of Geocoding • Preparing your data for Geocoding • How to Geocode
X, Y Coordinates -119°43’11.984” W 39°11’54.548” N
Why not use Google or a Similar Service? Not secure Doesn’t transfer to a map Can’t do analysis Batch geocoding an issue
Basics of Geocoding • Geocoding works by using Locators • Address points • Address Interpolation using Street centerline data • Zip code centroids • Cascading Locators
Zip Code Centroids Zip Codes Zip Codes are defined at the convenience of the U.S. Postal Service and can change for many reasons Average number of changes per year – 7,407.6 As of January 2014, there are roughly 453 Zip Codes in Nevada Average population per Zip Code – 7,423
Zip Code Centroids (continued) ZCTA – Zip Code Tabulation Areas • Census Blocks are assigned the most frequently used Zip Code • Blocks aggregated to make up the ZCTAs • U.S. Census population data is available
Geocoding Process Add the excel file to be geocoded Right-click the excel file in the Table of Contents Select the Geocode Addresses Choose the correct Address Locator Click OK Choose a location and name the Results file Click OK
Geocoding Process (continued) • Select Rematch to review the results • Determine if there are common characteristics that can easily be changed • Make note of the necessary changes to the addresses, and • Either correct the original file and rerun the geocoding process, or • Make the corrections in the Rematch dialog box • Make recommendations to standardize future data entry
