  3. Application Deadlines • Capacity Issues: • School Deadline Dates • State Deadline Dates • Peak Deadline Date, March 1st, Application Submission Statistics: • 144,522 electronic apps submitted • 60 transactions per second • 26,545 concurrent users

  4. 2005-06 Application Changes – The Paper FAFSA • Color change • Green (Pantone 344 CVU) for students • Purple (Pantone 263 CVU) for parents • FAFSA design and layout remain the same • Questions and numbering remain the same • IRS line items updated for 2004 tax returns • State aid deadlines have been updated

  5. 2005-06 Application Changes – The Paper FAFSA • Deadline notices changed from “Date Postmarked” to “Date Received” • Maryland • Montana • New York • Puerto Rico moved to the section marked “Check with your financial aid administrator”

  6. 2005-06 Application Changes-The Paper FAFSA • PIN Certification Statement added to Step 7 • Certifies that applicant is person identified by the PIN • Applicants must not share their PIN with anyone! • New PIN Text on the FAFSA Insert • Filing electronically saves time! • PIN is used to sign the FAFSA electronically • Encourages parents and students to apply for the PIN prior to submitting FAFSA • www.pin.ed.gov

  8. 2005-06 Application Changes - FOTW • Text added in the e-mail subject line to help students and parents differentiate ED e-mail from Spam e-mail • Added a message if the student responds “will file” to tax status question after April 15th

  9. 2005-06 Application Changes - FOTW • First 5 digits of parent’s SSN will display as “X”s in all FOTW applications (RFOTW, COTW, Spanish RFOTW, eSAR) for privacy • Example: XXX-XX-1234 • Parents will have the ability to carry over parental application data for multiple children

  10. 2005-06 Application Changes - FOTW • “Chat” icon renamed “Live Help” • New message added for “idle” sessions • “You’ve left the session idle for 25 minutes” • Lists current time • Lists time that session will expire (5 minutes from current time) • Choose “OK” to refresh session or “Cancel” to discontinue session • Removed the following pages: • “Supported Browser” • “Save Successful”

  11. 2005-06 Application Changes - FOTW • Students and parents can apply for a PIN from FOTW, without exiting the application • Separate questions ask each parent if they want to apply for a PIN

PIN Web Site Changes • New audit system will track PIN user activity, such as date and time PIN was used to sign the FAFSA • Added a “Challenge Phrase” for all users • Used for additional security to protect the applicant • Beginning January 1, 2005, a current PIN holder will be asked to select a “Challenge Phrase” and provide a “Challenge Response” in order to continue the authentication process • Beginning January 1, 2005, all new PIN recipients will be required to provide a “Challenge Phrase” and response to activate their PIN • “Challenge Phrase” may be supplied in lieu of PIN in order to update or change information on PIN Web Site

PIN Web Site Changes • FSA will disable PINs: • After 3 unsuccessful authentication attempts; PIN will stay disabled if the user does not remember the challenge phrase and answer provided after three attempts • After a 30-month period of inactivity • When there is a match with the SSA’s “Death File”

  19. PIN Web Site Changes • Added “Active Agreement” text to PIN Application page • Users asked to affirm that they will not share their PIN with anybody • Must actively confirm agreement • If users do not wish to actively confirm, they are prevented from submitting PIN application

  20. School Code Search Changes • Added the ability to sort schools listed in ascending order by: • School name • School code • School city

  21. Important Dates • Jan 1: FAFSA on the Web, Spanish FAFSA on the Web, Renewal FAFSA on the Web, and Corrections on the Web available • Jan 1: FAA Access to CPS Online available • Jan 3: Application processing system starts up

More Important Dates… • FOTW Toolkits mailed to State Agencies in November • Federal School Code lists mailed in November • Application Processing videoconference in November • FOTW Pre-Application Worksheet posted to www.fafsa.ed.gov in late November • FOTW and FAA Access to CPS Online Demo Sites available in early December

Future Changes to the FAFSA • In 2005-06, six school choices will remain on paper FAFSA • May need to reduce number of school choices on future paper FAFSAs • Continuing space issues on paper form • IRS income verification match may require additional data to be collected on the FAFSA • What do you think about having fewer school choices on paper, and six or more choices on the web? • In general, what do you think about having differences between paper and electronic forms?

  24. 2005-06 FAFSA/IRS Notification Process • After April 15, 2005, ED will notify FAFSA filers to compare income information on FAFSA with 2004 tax return and update FAFSA, if necessary • Notices will be sent to undergraduate students who – • Were not selected for verification • Have EFCs less than or equal to 6000 • Notices will be sent to dependent and independent students and parents of dependent students
