Pope Leo XIII – Our Name • Gioacchino Vincenzo Raffaele Luigi • b. March 2, 1810 • Carpineto, Italy • sixth of seven sons • Elected: February 20, 1878
Pope Leo XIII • His Papacy was one of the first to try to adapt the Church to the modern world. • He firmly re-asserted the Scholastic doctrine that science and religion could co-exist. • He also encouraged openness and discourse, opening the Vatican archives to historians and creating a number of institutions of higher learning.
Pope Leo XIII • Admirer of the United States • 1884 – He confirmed the decrees of the Third Plenary Council of Baltimore • Baltimore Catechism & catholic school for every church • 1886 – He raised Archbishop Gibbons (of Baltimore) to the cardinalate – but later wrote to him pointing out the dangers of Americanism. • 1889 – He sent a papal delegate, Monsignor Satolli, to represent the Pope in Washington on the occasion of the foundation of the Catholic University of America. • 1893 – He participated in the Chicago Exposition held to commemorate the fourth centenary of the discovery of the Americas (Christopher Columbus)
Pope Leo XIII – May 15, 1891 • Rerum Novarum (“The Condition of Labor”) • He defended the working man and private property rights. • He explained the sad deficiencies of Marxism. • This encyclical was written for several countries in different stages of the industrial revolution. • It is considered one of the most fruitful and effective principles of industrial justice that has ever been enunciated.
Pope Leo XIII - Accomplishments • Wrote 11 encyclicals devoted to the Blessed Mother. • Initiated the Feast of the “Holy Family”. • He died on July 20, 1903.

What We Do • Charitable Donations 2004 - 2005 $31,000
What do we do • KOVAR Drives – close to $30,000.00 raised for the special people • Winter Watch – 7 breakfasts and 1 dinner (Our Wives) each year • Winter Wear Drives – over 5,000 pieces collected and distributed to the needy • Special Olympics – Coordinate the Volleyball Event in the fall • Seminarians - $1,000.00 + each year to support Vocations • Scholarships - $1,000.00 each year to the youth of our parish
What do we do • Charitable Donations – Over $31,000 total in the last 2 years • Parish Fair – Chairmen, facilities, run booths • Fund Raising – $24,000 raised in the last year • Parish Ministries – Knights and families are cantors, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, ushers, counters, etc… • Parish Parties – Oktoberfest, Mardi-Gras, Beef & Beer, Spaghetti Dinner, etc…
What do we do • Family Breakfasts – Fund raiser as well as Parish get-togethers • Keep Christ in Christmas – Annual Christmas card sales • Flea markets • Other charitable causes – Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, Home Visitors, KOC Charities, Tsunami, Katrina, Haiti, Priest Support, Our Parish
