Chapter Goals • The goal of this chapter is to explain how leadership research is conducted, gain an appreciation for some of the practical applications of this research, and sharpen critical thinking skills about leadership and leadership research.

Two factors to consider when assessing leadership: • The researcher’s own definition of leadership will dictate what will be assessed in any given study. • The general assessment technique will dictate what is being studied.

Methods of Measuring the Effects of Leadership • Past performance appraisal ratings • Ratings from subordinates of their level of satisfaction or the effectiveness of their leader • Unit performance indices
Leadership practitioners should understand the difference between maxims and theories of leadership • Maxims are personal opinions that can give leaders valuable advice about leadership. However since they are personal opinions, different sets of maxims can give conflicting advice and there is not systematic way to test them.
