  21. SOME OF WHICH WAS inscribed as Scripture and was . . .

  22. All Scripture is God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16) “All” = every word “Scripture” = the inscribed revelation “God-breathed” = the source is God; GOD God-breathed! the product is “the Word of God!”

  23. rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Tim 3:15-16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, ... God-breathed! GOD

  24. SO, HOW DID GOD DO IT? All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, ... God-breathed! GOD

  25. 2 Peter 1:20-21 “no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, It did not originate in man! Superintendence:

  26. 21“but men spoke from God as they were carried alongby the Holy Spirit.” GOD Superintendence:

  27. Just as a pen was in the hand of the prophet so the prophet was in the hand of God! GOD Superintendence:

  28. Every word that the prophet wrote was the exact word that God had intended to be written! It is the Word of God! GOD Therefore:

  29. Jesus said, As such it isWithout Error! “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.” John 17:17 Hebrews 6:18 states that “it is impossible for God to lie.”

  30. Only “God-breathed” books belong in the Bible. Therefore, the standard, measuring rod, for books belonging inthe Bible is “God-breathed-ness.” In the ancient world the word for measuring rod was “Canon.” What books belong in the Bible?

  31. A book is not “God-breathed” because it is “canonical.” It is “canonical” because it is “God-breathed.” The_ “Canon”was recognized--not determined! What books belong in the Bible?

  32. John 10:25-27 Jesus answered, “... The miracles I do in my Father's name speak for me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” Miracles speak because they are revelation. ONE WAY What books belong in the Bible? They point to Christ!

  33. John 10:25-27 Jesus answered, “... The miracles I do in my Father's name speak for me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” Miracles speak because they are revelation. What books belong in the Bible? • Believers are Christ’s sheep

  34. • Believers are Christ’s sheep • Christ’s sheep “hear” his voice in God’s revelation.

  35. • Believers are Christ’s sheep • Christ’s sheep “hear” his voice in God’s revelation. • They follow His voice.

  36. John 10:25-27 Jesus answered, “... The miracles I do in my Father's name speak for me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” Historically, the sheep, as a corporate entity (church), have recognized God’s voice in only in 66 books of the Bible. The books that they have corporately acknowledged are called “canonical books.” What books belong in the Bible?

  37. The Bible is a Library of 66 books.

  38. Matthew 5:18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Genesis 1:1 Preservation:

  42. Matthew 5:18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Preservation:

  43. God has preserved His Word. Somewhere within the manuscript evidence God’s Word has been preserved. Our Bible, as it accuratelytranslates the original text, is the Word of God! Because this is so . . . Therefore,

  44. through His Word! GOD God’s normal way of speakingto us today is

  45. NEXT TIME: Interpretation:How do I know what in the Bible applies to me?

  46. ASSIGNMENT: • Memorize: 2 Timothy 3:16 • Read New Christians Handbook chapters 11-12 • There will be a quiz next week!

  47. DISCOVERY 101 Discovering God’s Word—“Inspiration” Prepared by Dennis Henderson, D.Min. Let’s Review: Hebrew 1:1, 2 “In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son.” God spoke . . . Through prophets--Through visions--Through dreams--Through voices--Through lots--Through theophanies--Through writing--Through miracles--Through incarnation God Speaks: through . . . Creation: Psalm 19:1 & Romans 1:18-20 1.The Glory of God (Ps 19:1) 2.The Wrath of God (Rom 1:18) 3.The Power of God (Rom 1:20) 4.The Nature of God (Rom 1:20) A few observations about Natural Revelation: 1. The revelation in creation is plain and clear to all people (Rom 1:19,20) 2. People are sinners and suppress the clear revelation in creation (1:19). 3. It only condemns--does not save! Therefore . . . 4. People need “special revelation” to point them to God’s grace. 5. So God gave special revelation . . .

  48. People need “special revelation” to point to God’s grace in order to be saved. Some of the “Special revelation” was inscribed as Scripture and as such was . . . I. God-breathed: 2 Tim 3:15-16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. “All” = every single word “Scripture” = the inscribed revelation = all writings that fall into the technical category of being “God’s written revelation” “God-breathed” = indicates two important features: --the source is God; All writings that fall into the technical category of being scripture are from God --the product is “the Word of God!” “God breathed-ness” is the quality that scriptures possess--it is not the process. It result of a process--God breathed is the quality that the product scriptures possess. So, how did God do it? II.Superintendence: (superintendence is the process that leads to the product of God-breathed-ness!) 2 Peter 1:20-21 no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. • Scripture did not originate in man! • It is the result of having been “Carried along by Holy Spirit!” [Illustration of a boat = When I was a boy we had a swimming pool in our back yard. We would make a whirlpool by all moving in one direction around the pool. I then put a small boat in the water and wherever the current went the boat went too. The boat was carried along by the current! Likewise, the authors of the Bible were carried along (Superintended) by the Holy Spirit so that every word they wrote, though their very own, was exactly what the Spirit superintended to be written.)] Therefore,

  49. Just as a pen was in the hand of the prophet so the prophet was in the hand of God! Every word that the prophet wrote was the exact word that God had intended to be written! It is the Word of God! As such it is … III.Without Error (Inerrant) Hebrews 6:18 states that “it is impossible for God to lie.” Jesus said, “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.” John 17:17 So then, what books belong in the Bible? IV.The Canon of Scripture 1--Only “God-breathed” books belong in the Bible. 2--Therefore, the standard, measuring rod, for books belonging in the Bible is “God-breathed-ness.” 3--In the ancient world the word for measuring rod was “Canon.” 4--A book is not “God-breathed” because it is “canonical.” 5--It is “canonical” because it is “God-breathed.” (If the book has the quality of being “God-breathed” it is canonical. If it does not it is non-canonical.) 6--The“Canon” was recognized--not determined! The church did not determine what scripture was God-breathed. It recognized that certain books had the quality of being “God-breathed.” So how was it recognized? John 10:25-27 Jesus answered, “... The miracles I do in my Father's name speak for me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” Please notice what Jesus said:
