  5. Video…

  6. Storm SurvivorQuestion Why is it important to protect water quality?

  7. Storm SurvivorAnswer We depend on clean water for: • Drinking water • Recreation – boating, fishing, swimming • Economic development

  8. Storm SurvivorQuestion How does storm water runoff cause water pollution?

  9. Storm SurvivorAnswer Storm water runoff, which picks up pollutants such as oil and grease, dirt, and chemicals, flows directly into streams or lakes. Storm water runoff does not go to a water treatment plant!

  10. Storm SurvivorQuestion What problems can result from pollution in storm water runoff?

  11. Storm SurvivorAnswer Pollution from storm water can cause: • Excess algae growth • Fish kills • More expensive treatment for drinking water

  12. Materials Storage…

  13. Storm SurvivorQuestion What materials are used that could contaminate storm water?

  14. Storm SurvivorAnswer Some materials that can cause storm water pollution are: • Fuels, oils, antifreeze, and grease • Fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides • Paint, solvents, detergents • Soil (sediment), concrete wash water

  15. Storm SurvivorQuestion Why is it important to keep materials in original containers or clearly labeled replacement containers?

  16. Storm SurvivorAnswer To avoid misuse of products that could cause personal injury and pollute storm water.

  17. Storm SurvivorQuestion What is the best location for storage of hazardous materials?

  18. Storm SurvivorAnswer Hazardous materials should be stored: • Indoors • Outdoors: within a covered, paved area • Outdoors: uncovered if contained in a sealed container

  19. Storm SurvivorQuestion What are the basic steps for cleaning up a liquid spill?

  20. Storm SurvivorAnswer Liquid spill cleanup procedures: • Contain the spill using a drip pan or absorbent materials • Cover storm drains if necessary • Locate the source of the spill and stop further spillage • Use absorbents rather than hosing down the area • Immediately dispose of absorbents in accordance with procedures

  21. Parks and Grounds…

  22. Storm SurvivorQuestion Why do native and adapted plants require less water, fertilizer and pesticides?

  23. Storm SurvivorAnswer Native and adapted plants have a natural tolerance to drought and poor soil conditions.

  24. Storm Survivor Question Why is important to prevent irrigation water from running off grass or landscaped areas ?

  25. Storm SurvivorAnswer It is important to reduce irrigation runoff because: • Fertilizer, pesticides, and herbicides may be carried to streams by the runoff • Saves water!

  26. Storm SurvivorQuestion What weather-related factors should be considered when determining whether it’s OK to apply pesticides or herbicides ?

  27. Storm SurvivorAnswer Don’t apply pesticides or herbicides during windy conditions or when rain is predicted within 24 hours.

  28. Fleet Maintenance…

  29. Storm SurvivorQuestion Where should vehicle maintenance activities be conducted?

  30. Storm SurvivorAnswer Indoors Outdoors with appropriate precautions for spills & leaks Using appropriate equipment

  31. Storm SurvivorQuestion What potential pollutants do you handle in your daily activities?

  32. Storm SurvivorAnswer Fuels Oils Grease/Lube oil Other vehicle fluids Solvents/parts washing Oily rags

  33. Storm SurvivorQuestion What is the proper disposal method for fluids?

  34. Storm SurvivorAnswer NOT down the storm drain!

  35. Streets and Drainage…

  36. Storm SurvivorQuestion Why is sediment considered a pollutant ?

  37. Storm SurvivorAnswer It clogs fish gills and kills them. Pollutants can to attach to sediment & be transported.

  38. Storm SurvivorQuestion Why should oil-based paint and solvents be handled differently than water-based paint?

  39. Storm SurvivorAnswer Oil-based paints contain hazardous substances that require special handling. Solvents & thinners may also be hazardous.

  40. Storm SurvivorQuestion What are some signs of pollution to look for when conducting daily activities?

  41. Storm SurvivorAnswer Oil sheen Excess trash and debris Odor Colored or cloudy water Dead/dying fish

  42. Land Disturbance…

  43. Storm SurvivorQuestion What precautions should be used regarding dirt stockpiles?

  44. Storm SurvivorAnswer Locate away from streets, Away from runoff and flowing water. Cover stockpiles or use a barrier.

  45. Storm SurvivorQuestion Why is erosion prevention more effective than sediment removal?

  46. Storm SurvivorAnswer It’s really difficult to remove sediment from runoff - how do to catch the water and how do you remove the sediment?

  47. Storm SurvivorQuestion What BMPs can be used for preventing erosion?

  48. Storm SurvivorAnswer Erosion BMPs: vegetation, mulching. Blankets, plastic sheeting. Sediment BMPs: organic filter berm, sediment fence, sediment dikes, inlet protection. Waste Mgmt BMPS: debris & trash control, chemical mgmt, concrete washout in designated facilities
