Vision summary Our vision is to engage students in the EIC Program by exposing them to real life investigations by connecting the natural environment with the school and neighboring community. This will provide educational opportunities for academic and social success by using the best instructional practices and methods that focus on content standards from a interdisciplinary and community-based learning methodology.

Organizing question In what ways will access to the urban forest provide a framework for addressing standards in multiple subject areas through interdisciplinary learning activities and develop environmental awareness among students and residents, resulting in protection and preservation of the urban forest…?
How does the forest/riparian corridor affect the community? What are some various ways to assess the urban forest in our community? What is the process for making a path/sidewalk and who are the people involved? How is the local watershed affected by the building of the sidewalk? supporting questions
Standard based specific objectives Science~ Observes and describes plant parts as they grow and change. Compares the roots, stems and leaves of various plants as they grow from seeds to mature plants
Standard based specific objectives Health • Students will demonstrate ability to work as a team and solve problems as a team
Standard based specific objectives Language Arts ~Students will use reference skills to increase vocabulary, read a variety of materials for information and develop standard communication.
Standard based specific objectives Math ~ Students will use units of measurement, ordering, sorting, classifying, problem solving strategies, as well as, collect, organize, read, interpret and compare data using charts, tables and graphs.
Standard based specific objectives Social Studies ~ Student will construct and read, map, key/legend, and symbols. Students will recognize the responsibilities of citizenship and community service using information processing skills
Community based learning objectives Science~Students will observe, research, compare and describe different native plants and animals.
Community based learning objectives Health ~ Students will work in teams to complete research projects on the urban forest and design and develop a pedestrian path to the greenway.
Community based learning objectives Language Arts ~ Students will research, write letters, conduct interviews, make presentations, maintain logs and journals.
Community based learning objectives Social Studies ~ Students will identify the steps involved in bringing sidewalk and path project to completion. (Community government approval process, funding, design and construction.)
Community based learning objectives Math ~ Students will calculate distances, log plant growth, develop timeline for animal and plant life cycles.
Service learning projects • Initiate process for constructing a path and sidewalks to access the urban forest around school and in the neighborhood • Student will research adoption of greenway on Childress @ CUMC, as well as, the Cascade Nature Reserve
