A Typical Day in Kindergarten • Arrival and Unpack (Goal is to foster independence) • Daily Early Bird • Morning Meeting/Shared Reading • Read Aloud/Writer’s Workshop • Independent Reading • Reading Workshop-Stations and Guided Reading • Recess and SNACK • Math and Math Stations • Science/SS/Health • Social Emotional Learning

  5. Kindergarten Specials • Monday PE 9:00-9:30 Music 1:30-2:00 • Tuesday Art 9:00-9:30 Library 1:30-2:00 • Wednesday PE 9:00-9:30 Dreambox Lab 12:30-1:00 Reading Buddies 1:30-2:00 • Thursday Music 9:00-9:30 PE 1:00-1:30 • Friday Guidance/SEARCH9:00-9:30 (every other week)

  6. Lunch and Snack • We have lunch scheduled at 10:55-11:25. • We’ll have snack in the afternoon. • Please send in snack in Ziplock Bag. This will be separated from lunch. • Students will need water bottles daily.

  7. Curriculum • Pathways to Literacy • County wide and consistent for grades K-2 • Charts and sight words • 5 Components • Read Aloud • Independent Reading • Shared Reading /Big Books, Poems • Reader’s Workshop/Literacy Stations • Writer’s Workshop

  8. Curriculum • Math • Utilize Whole Group and Math Stations • Houghton Mifflin-Go Math! • Student Discovery • Hands-on • Topics • Number sense, patterns, shapes, counting, money, measurement, addition, subtraction, data collection, graphing

  9. Volunteering 1. Room Parents (Multiple parents can share these duties) • Will be responsible for ……… • planning and running parties • Making class directory • Helping with school wide projects 2. Word and Sound work during Literacy Stations Pull children into hallway during stations time to work on letter/sound and sight word recognition. Or work with a small group during stations. • Games will be provided • Art Room Help during scheduled Art time on Tuesdays, 9:00-9:30. One person once a week or two people, twice a month. • Read with students

  10. Classroom Management • How would I describe my classroom management? • Structured • Consistent • Organized • Caring • Respectful • Fun

Classroom Management • Class Dragon Bite Jar • Rewards given to the entire class (wear PJ’s to school, extra recess, bring favorite toy to school, etc.) • Behavior Dragons (individual) • When students show “ROAR” behavior, I move their clip to visually show the class the good example the student is showing. Notes are sent home on Friday.

  14. What can you do at home? • Give your children the opportunity to color, cut, paste, write, and read at home. • Encourage Independence! Bathroom and lunch etiquette! • Practice Sight words….play games! • Visit the Library! • PLAY OUTSIDE with your children and have many great conversations about everything! • Great websites to explore~ • http://www.abcya.com/ • www.starfall.com • http://pbskids.org/

  15. Star of the week • Each student will be Star of the Week! • A letter of information will come home explaining what to do. • I send letters home alphabetically so that will determine when you child will be the star. • Posters will come home for you to make and decorate with your child.

  16. Book Orders • I will be sending home Scholastic Book orders several times this year. • Optional • Great way to get your child excited about reading

  17. Communication • Email: Kate.Ramos@lcps.org • I rarely get to check emails during the school day. I will reply as soon as possible. • If you have important information, especially a change in dismissal, please send a note in your child’s “Daily Work Folder” or call the school. Miscellaneous • Birthdays • Your child may not bring in favor bags or edible treats (LCPS policy) • Please send birthday invitations for the whole class or mail individual ones home • We will sing to your child and your child will get to wear a crown • Summer birthdays will be celebrated at the end of the year.

  19. Bus Tags! These MUST be on your child’s backpack at all times. If you get a new backpack, you must put the tag on the new one. Children may not get on the school bus without a tag. Parents/Caregivers must have a tag to pick up children from bus stops.
