SAFE MOVE for older drivers: A joint French – Swedish research initiative (2012-2015)
Background and objectives Background • Aging population -> more older drivers on the roads • Older drivers (65 – 70) a healthier cohort, i.e. focus on 70+ • Safe mobility promotes health, independence and reduce public costs • Over estimation – increased risk • Under estimation – decreased mobility • Use it (and train it) or lose it – you can learn old dogs new tricks! • Increased market for driver support systems Three main objectives • identify determinants for driving regulation, i.e. factors leading to under- and overestimation of cognitive ability and driving performance. • develop and evaluate a driving simulator based training (DSBT) curriculum for older drivers • adapt driver support systems with the aim to prolong safe driving for older drivers Safe Move
SAFE MOVE scope Awareness of driving ability Safe Move
Over and Under Estimation • Compare self assessment with the ”truth” • Different truths – objective data and expert assessment • Two approaches – driving performance (SE) and cognitive ability (FR) • Not primarily change the performance but to calibrate - consistency Safe Move
Three sub-projects • SP 1 - Determinants of driving regulation in older drivers • Literature review – older drivers’ perception of difficulties • Cohort study: questionnaire (Sweden) and personal visits (France) • On-road driving assessment (joint with SP3) • SP 2 - Simulator based assessment and training of older drivers • Literature review - training needs for older drivers • Driving Simulator Based Training (DSBT) curriculum for older drivers • Evaluation of DSBT curriculum • Mitigation of simulator adaptation syndrome (simulator sickness) • SP 3 - Driver monitoring functions for adaptive assistance for older drivers • Older driver’ requirements and driving assistance characteristics • Older driver monitoring strategy for on-line adaptation • Validation and demonstrations - guidelines Safe Move
