UCD ACCESS & LIFELONG LEARNING Perfectionism • Mistakenly seen as desirable or even necessary for success. • To protect sense of self, decide that perfection is the only defence. • Causes: learned you were valued for your achievements, value self based on other’s approval • Accompanying: • Negative thoughts: fear of failure or making mistakes, all-or-nothing thinking, over-emphasis on ‘should’ or ‘must’ • Unhelpful behaviours: avoiding writing, constant checking • Negative predictions : “I won’t do it well”
