  1. A quick lesson in e-mail etiquette Dear Ms. Schnell, I am in you ___period chemistry class and think I might of copied down your website incorrectly since I have tried reaching it many times and from different computers. The link I copied down is this https://www.greenechemistry.wikispace.com/ and it hasn't been working for me. If I did copy it down wrong as I suspect would you please send me the actual link. I am very sorry for disturbing you but thank you for reading this. Thank you, ________ Div. ___ Chemistry ____st/th period.

  2. Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures Ms. Schnell Lane Tech College Prep 2014-2015

  3. VS How are Elements and Compounds Different? • And • NaCl • salt

  4. Distinguishing Elements and Compounds • Element - the simplest form of matter that has a unique set of properties. *Every atom of an element has the same number of protons • Ex: Carbon ,helium, lithium • Compound - a substance that contains two or more elements combined in a fixed proportion • Ex: Magnesium oxide (MgO), water (H2O), Sodium Chloride (NaCl)

  5. Breaking Down Compounds • In general, Compounds CAN be broken down into simpler substances by chemical or physical changes. Elements cannot. • Ex: When sugar is heated, it goes through a chemical change • Sugar —> Carbon + Water • compound element compound • C12H22O11 —> C H2O

  6. Mixtures • A mixture can be defined as: something that has variable composition. *Mixtures can be separated into pure substances- elements or compounds • EX: AIR is a mixture of oxygen, nitrogen, water, carbon dioxide, argon, and other pure substances • wood is a mixture (composition varies depending on what type of tree it originated from) • Homogeneous Mixture • Heterogeneous Mixture • Vs • The same throughout • Also called a “solution” • Ex: Apple juice, milk, NaOH solution (this means that NaOH has been dissolved in water) • contains regions that have different properties from those of other regions • Ex: water and oil, chocolate chip cookies, a mixture of salt and pepper

  7. Element, Compound, Mixture

  8. Fill in the Concept Map • Matter • Pure • Substance • Mixture • Element • Compound • Homogeneous • Heterogeneous
