France: 1800-1832 Napoleon Bourbon Restoration Kingdom Uprising
Emperor Napoleon (1804-1815) • “Emperor of the French” • Despite lingering issues within France, Napoleon turns his attention to the conquest of other nations to build the French Empire. • International conflict with almost every nation in Europe between 1803-1815… Napoleon Commanding His Troops
First Restoration (1814) • Bourbon family (a la Louis XV and XVI) return to the throne (Britain’s choice—Austria preferred Napoleon’s heir, and Russia the Orléans family) • Louis XVIII—offered to Napoleon if he’d return France to its 1792 state, but he refused. • Charter of 1814: Creation of Chamber of Peers and Chamber of Deputies (though these roles were mostly consultative) • Only 1% of people in France could vote at the time of the First Restoration. Louis XVIII
Charles X (1824-1830) • Louis XVIII’s brother • Ultra-royalist (wanted to restrict freedom of the press and to limit/remove left-wing radicalism—absolutist, ancién) • Growing unrest with the state of the government • Series of harvest failures and widespread famine—possibly worse than 1789’s famine. • Attempted to add in 1830 the Four Ordinances to the Charter of 1814
Four Ordinances • Dissolution of the Chamber of Deputies • Restriction of the Press Laws • Restriction of franchise to only the wealthiest within France • New elections after further government polarization… MOBS MOBILIZED.
July Monarchy • Louis-Phillipe (Orléans…)—1830-1848 • Father supported French Revolution and was guillotined. • King of the French • “a juste milieu“ • “the just middle” • Equidistant from the “excesses of popular power and the abuses of royal power.”
June Rebellion • June 5 to June 6, 1832 • Mostly students participated • Anti-monarchist uprising to attempt to reverse July Monarchy • Fueled by death of Jean MaximilienLamarque (former commander in Napoleonic Wars who railed against the ancién) Lamarque
