The Mission of AVID The mission of AVID is to ensure that ALL students, and most especially the least served students who are in the middle: • will succeed in rigorous curriculum, • will complete a rigorous college preparatory path, • will enter mainstream activities of the school, • will increase their enrollment in four-year colleges, and • will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society.
AVID Student Profile Students with Academic Potential: • Average to high test scores • 2.0 – 3.5 GPA • College potential with support • Desire and determination Meets selection criterion of: • First to attend college • Historically underserved in 4-year colleges • Special circumstances
AVID aligns with KSD Mission:“Successfully Prepare All Students For Their Future” • AVID is an in-school academic support program designed to help students prepare for four-year college eligibility. Currently located at Kent-Meridian, Kentridge, Mill Creek and Sequoia. • AVID targets the student in the “academic middle” who are under represented in college. • AVID levels the playing field for minority, low-income and other students without a college-going tradition in their family. • AVID has increased the number of minority students in honors and AP courses.
AVID in KENT • Kentridge – 64 students - grades 9-11 • Kent-Meridian - 49 students - grades 9 &10 • Mill Creek – 40 students - grades 7 & 8 • Sequoia – 45 students - grades 7 & 8
What does the data tells us? • All AVID students are enrolled in college preparatory courses • Mill Creek – students successfully completing accelerated math courses • AVID students enrolled in one or more honors level or advanced math course • AVID students GPA reflect success in rigorous courses • Kentridge – 23 AVID juniors are taking 39 AP or Honors courses • AVID has increased the percentage of minority students represented in honors and AP courses
What do AVID students say? AVID Student Survey results: • 85 % yes I feel more confident about school. • 95% yes I feel my AVID teacher cares about me and advocates for me. • 97% yes I plan on attending college.
Student Voice – “What has helped me most in AVID?” • The feeling like I have a future. Before joining AVID, I was lost in what I wanted to do with my life, but now I feel secure because AVID has helped me choose what is right for me and what I want to do when I am older. - KR student • I have more confidence and self-discipline. I can motivate myself in all that I do. – KM student • Thinking and mapping out my future has pushed me to achieve higher grades than I thought I was capable of. - KR student • It teaches you how to advocate for yourself. So now I am speaking more for myself. – KM student
Student Voice – “What positive changes have you seen in yourself since being in AVID?” • I have been more responsible and confident with my daily school work. -SQ student • Last year I wasn’t in AVID and all I got was D’s, C’s, and F’s. Now that I pay more attention and the ways AVID taught me I get all B’s now! – MC student • I have seen a boost in my grades and my self-confidence. -SQ student • I started caring more about my work than I used to which helped me with my grades. – MC student
Expansion Plans for 2007-08 • Add AVID at Kentlake and Kentwood • Expand AVID strategies for organization, Cornell note taking, higher order thinking skills, and peer collaboration to SLC’s in each school • Seek funding source to expand to all middle schools in 08-09
