  7. Japanese empire • By early 1942, Japan controlled • Hong Kong, French Indochina (Vietnam), Malaya, Burma, Thailand, parts of China • Formosa (Taiwan), Dutch East Indies, Guam, Wake Island, Solomon Islands, other islands
