QRPA method within the mean-field+Lanczos approach The FIDIPRO team University of Jyväskylä FIDIPRO-UNEDF collaboration meeting on nuclear energy-density-functional methods Jyväskylä, October 9-10, 2008
Motivation & Background • Standard RPA and QRP calculations in deformed nuclei are very difficult because of exploding size of two-(quasi)particle space: • matrices of size N2N2 must be diagonalized, for the single-particle space of N~100 (axial symmetry) or N~1000 (triaxial symmetry) . • calculation of the two-body matrix elements is the bottleneck. • RPA and QRPA methods are based on the time-dependent EDF (DFT), which is believed to be well founded for calculation of excited states. • No extension to beyond-mean field is necessary. • The same functional defines RPA-QRPA and ground states. • Beta decay rates known in many (deformed) nuclei: • invaluable source of data for adjusting functionals • in strong demand from experimentalists • crucial for extrapolations and astrophysics
