THE PROBLEM • “Today’s generation of young people may be the first in American history to not live life-spans as long as those of their parents.” • -Dr. David Katz, Yale Public Healthy Expert • Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in the US. • 35.8% of Monterey County Children ages 2-5 years are either overweight or at risk for overweight* • 40.9% of Monterey County teens ages 12-17 are either overweight, or at risk for overweight.* THE CAUSE --High Fat/ High Sugar Diets --Processed Foods --Physical Inactivity --Food Advertising --Lack of awareness about proper nutrition and benefits of exercise --Only 50% of adults, 50% of children, and 25% of teens are consuming five or more servings of fruits and vegetables.* *Produced by Monterey County Health Department, Community Assessment and Data Analysis Unit, 2007

Simply Fresh TV 60-second commercials broadcast over 230 times per month on all regional broadcast and cable channels in English and Spanish. Recipes are now featured in Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital’s cafeteria with patient meals as well as in the California Coast Parent magazine. They are also available at: www.helpchooseyourlife.org
Cooking Demos Live cooking demos and produce sampling in local farmers markets, schools, clubs, parent clubs, community health fairs and special events. HELP recipes are featured in each issue of Central Coast Parent Magazine and utilized at Salinas Valley Memorail Hospital's cafeteria and patient meals. “Chefs Move to Schools” First Lady Michelle Obama addressed hundreds of chefs on the South Lawn of the White House for the “Chefs Move to Schools” program, a part of the “Let’s Move!” campaign to end the epidemic of childhood obesity. The program paired chefs with schools across the country to help teach kids healthy habits.
Parent EducationParent Education consists of nutrition education classes with hands-on activities. These classes focus on specific themes, such as “Let’s go to the Market”, “Healthy Parties”, “Eat Your Rainbow”, and chef demos to assist in the easy way of incorporating more fruits and vegetables in to family meals. Each theme has a specific curriculum where parents learn the importance of healthy eating. They are shown how to incorporate what they have learned in their everyday grocery buying and meal preparation. The teachers facilitate parent discussions that underscore the importance of eating more fruits and vegetables while participating in regular physical activity. Parents also learn strategies to overcome barriers or challenges in getting their children to eat a variety of produce.
Community Events HELP actively networks with the local community, attending Nutrition Fitness Collaborative of the Central Coast meetings, spreading the word at city and community health fairs, and more!
Food for ThoughtThe following describes the costs of the individual programs. This is the menu of courses you can choose to sponsor for HELP: After School and High School and Middle School Program The cost of this 10 week program is $4000.00 Family Nights Parent Education A parent nutrition class can be scheduled at a cost of $375.00 Community Events The cost for HELP representation at Health Fairs is $300 per day. Cooking Demonstrations The cost of a chef demo is $450.00
