Introduction • News report: Kody • Finish characters on page 17. • Emphasis is on the stroke orders of the radicals. • Repeat, repeat, repeat the characters. • On Friday, we will try to cover Chinese history, post 1911. • The Unit 1 test is coming up very soon, within 10-15 days likely. START STUDYING NOW. It will cover lessons 1 through 6, and cultural/historical information. Continue listening to Chinese Pods and the textbook CD. These will help significantly on the pronunciation/listening portion.

  3. 第五课 • Key vocabulary on page 19. You MUST know these words. This will be on the next quiz. • Remember that there are three written forms of saying he/she/it. They are all pronounced the same as Tā. • 他 HE • 她 SHE (Note how the radical for female in front.) • 它 IT (this one is not as common, but it is used for inanimate objects.) • Listen to the dialogues on page 18. These give the proper pronunciation for the words and also place them into sentences. • Listen through, and translate each.

  4. Interesting phrase using 马 • The character 马(Mǎ)means horseand is also a common surname in China. A very popular phrase in Chinese is 马上到 (Mǎshàngdào), which means basically “I’ll arrive very soon, I’m hurrying!”. • We remember that the character 上 (shàng) means above. We see this character in the name Shanghai 上海, which means literally Above the sea. • The character 到 (dào) means arrive. • Thus, the phrase 马上到 literally means On horse, I arrive. • This phrases dates back to the days when horses were actually the fastest way to get from one place to another.

  5. Continued exercises for lesson 5 • Do all exercises on pages 19-20 in class. • Focus on radicals on page 21. • Homework: All exercises in the workbook on pages 18 to 22. Write the characters on page 21-22 ten times on a separate sheet of paper. • Start studying for the quiz we will have on Monday for Lesson 5.
