  2. Ceremony [ˈserəməni] • 1) [countable] a public or religious occasion that includes a series of formal or traditional actions * an awards/opening ceremony * a wedding/marriage ceremony • 2 [uncountable] formal behaviour; traditional actions and words used on particular formal occasions

  3. Ritual [ˈrɪtʃuəl] • 1) a series of actions that are always performed in the same way, especially as part of a religious ceremony • 2 ) something that is done regularly and always in the same way * Sunday lunch with the in-laws has become something of a ritual.

  4. Custom [ˈkʌstəm] • 1) custom (of doing something) an accepted way of behaving or of doing things in a society or a community * the custom of giving presents at Christmas • 2) (formal or literary) the way a person always behaves * It was her custom to rise early.

  5. Tradition [ trəˈdɪʃn] a belief, custom or way of doing something that has existed for a long time among a particular group of people; a set of these beliefs or customs * religious/cultural, etc. * By tradition, children play tricks on 1 April. *There's a tradition in our family that we have a party on New Year's Eve.
