  2. How Many are There? • 13,433 students enrolled at UMass Boston in Fall 2007 • Of these, 10,008 were undergraduates; • 74.5% of the total enrollment

  3. How Many Undergraduates are Full-Time/Part-Time? • Two thirds are full time students

  4. How Many Students are Men/Women? • 57% of our undergraduate students are women.

  5. Ethnicity/Race of Undergraduates • 42% of our undergrads are known US Students of Color

  6. How Many Undergraduates are Degree Seeking? • We have 6,342 degree-seeking, full-time undergraduates • We have 2,473 degree-seeking, part-time students

  7. Fall 2007, Degree-Seeking, Full-Time Undergraduates by Age • 18-24 – 78% • 25-29 – 13% • 30 and over – 9%

  9. How do we compare in student age? • The median age of undergraduate students at UMass Boston is 22 • The median age of undergraduates at sister UMass institutions is 20 or 21 • Why is our median higher? – transfer students

  10. Admissions – How Many? • About 60% of our entering students are transfers

  11. Socio-economic Status of Undergrads • One of the commonly used measures of SES is the percentage of students who are Pell eligible • Pell grants are targeted at the lowest income students/families • About 1/3 of our full-time, instate, financial aid applicants are Pell eligible. • At Amherst, Dartmouth and Lowell the figure is about 1/5th

  12. First Generation College Students? • Data from the National Survey of Student Engagement and from the Cooperative Institutional Research Program Freshmen Survey • Just over 50% of our first year students are first generation (neither parent graduated from college)

  13. Language other than English spoken at home • Data from various surveys, including NSSE, alumni surveys suggest that between 30% and 40% of our undergraduates speak languages other than English at home

  14. Citizenship • One significant difference in the responses of UMass Boston students is in citizenship.

  15. Birth Origin or Age at Entry to US • Our student population reflects the migration patterns of the country and of the city. • Immigration into the US has increased significantly in the last decades of the 20th century, with especially large numbers of people from Asia and from the Americas.

  16. But Don’t Forget! • We have some of everyone at UMass Boston! • For every person who is Pell eligible, there are those who are not • For every ‘older’ student, there are younger ones • For every ‘non traditional’ student, there is a traditional one!
