  1. The Steps to Take After a Motor Vehicle Accident

  2. According to the United States Census Bureau, approximately 10.5 million people are involved in a motor vehicle accident every year. Consequently, you are unfortunately likely to find yourself in a car accident sometime in your life. These are the steps you should take if you find yourself in a motor vehicle accident:

  3. Check the Well-Being of All Drivers and Passengers. • If you or any parties involved are hurt and are need of medical attention, call 911. • Call the Police and Have an Accident Report Completed. • If for whatever reason the police will not respond to your accident, exchange information and fill out an accident form. In Oklahoma, accident report forms can be found at QuikTrip Convenient Stores. Fill out the form to the best of your ability and file at the proper law enforcement agency within 30 days of the accident.

  4. Exchange Information • Exchange insurance information as well as personal information including name, address, tag number and driver’s license number, if possible. We recommend obtaining this information yourself even if police do complete a report as there have been incidents where the police officer did not record the correct information. • Take Pictures • Record the damage by taking photos of both vehicles.

  5. Witnesses • If there are any witnesses to the accident, obtain their contact information for future reference. • Set Up Claim with Your Insurance • After the accident, call your insurance company to report the accident. Your insurance will ask several questions pertaining to your accident. Answer these questions completely and honestly. • If the other parties’ insurance contacts you, let them know you do not wish to make a statement without the advisement of your insurance company or your attorney.

  6. Seek Medical Treatment • If you are hurt in the accident, seek medical treatment in a timely manner. Keep record of all providers that you saw, or are seeing, along with the dates of treatment. • Consider Hiring an Attorney • If you are injured in an accident, you should consider hiring an attorney. With the assistance of an attorney, there is a better chance of maximizing your recovery benefits. Most personal injury attorneys work on a contingency fee basis meaning that your attorney only receives compensation if you're awarded damages or receive a settlement.

  7. If you are injured in a motor vehicle accident in the State of Oklahoma, consider calling Garrett Law Center to set up an intake with an experienced personal injury attorney.
