Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis A Neurological Disease By: Mallory, LaTashia, & Brittany
WHAT HAPPENS? • A neurological (dealing with the brain) disease that causes muscle weakness, disability, and eventually death. • Paralyzes your muscles needed to breath. • “Lou Gehrig’s Disease” • Famous baseball player that brought awareness to the disease
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS & SYMPTOMS? • Begins with muscle twitching & weakness in arm or leg or with slurring of speech. • Affects the ability to control the muscles needed to move, speak, eat, & breath. • THERE IS NO REVERSING THIS COURSE!
WHO GETS THIS? • Occurs in one to three people per 100,000. • Inherited form of the disease occurs in 5-10% of the cases. • Doctors don’t know why it occurs in some people and not others • Ages 40-60 years of age • Less than 65yrs: more men than women get it • More than 70yrs: the gender doesn’t matter NO CURE!!!!!
Diagnosis It is difficult to diagnose early because it may appear similar to other diseases... ELECTROMYOGRAM Measures tiny electrical discharges in produced muscles. Wire electrode inserted into muscles dr. wants to study It records electric activity in muscles as they rest & contract
Diagnosis cont. • NERVE CONDUCTION STUDY • Electrodes attached to skin above nerve/muscle being studied • Small shock passed through nerves to measure strength &speed of nerve signal
Diagnosis cont. • MRI • Produces detailed images of brain & spinal cord • Lying on a bed that slides into a tube shaped machine (loud thumping & banging noises)
Diagnosis cont. • Spinal Tap (Lumber Puncture) • Analyzes fluid around brain & spinal cord (cerebrospinal fluid) • Lay on side with knees drawn up to chest. • Anesthetic injected in lower spinal area to reduce discomfort from procedure. • Needle inserted into spinal canal & fluid is collected.
Diagnosis cont. • Blood & Urine Tests • Muscle Biopsy • Small portion if muscle is removed while under local anesthesia & is sent to lab to be analyzed.
HOW IS IT TREATED? • No Preventable treatment exists • Riluzole (a drug that may slow down the process) • Therapy: Physical, Occupational, & Speech
What Is The Prognosis?? • 3 year survival rate • 50% live more then 3 years after diagnosis • 5 year survival rate • 20% lives more then 5 years • 10 year survival rate • 10% lives more then 10 years
