CI-202 & CI-203 Laser Leaf Area Meters Wednesday, October 23, 2013 Conducted by: Brienne Meyer bmeyer@cid-inc.com
Agenda/Outline • CI-202 • CI-202 with roots • CI-203 • CI-203CA
Selling Points Three points to make • Accuracy • Portability • Ease of Use
CI-202 Portable Leaf Area Meter • Fast, non-destructive measurements • Length • Width • Area • Perimeter • Aspect Ratio • Shape factor
Ratio and Factor • Aspect Ratio: leaf length to its maximum width • Shape factor: ratio of leaf area to leaf perimeter • Ranges from 0 to 1 • Shape factor of a circle = 1 http://www.livingcropmuseum.info
The CI-202 and CI-203 are Accurate & Precise • The only area meters using laser detection • Easily measures as small as 2mm x 2mm • Accuracy: ± 1% or better
CI-202 • High resolution • with filter off: detect objects up to 0.2mm wide • vertical resolution is about 0.25mm • Transfers data to computer via USB
CI-202 Scan Board • Scan board or palette with plastic cover sheet • Protects fragile, delicate leaves • Leaf can be attached to plant or removed • hand-hold on back for easy use in field
How to Demonstrate the CI-202 • Lift plastic cover • Place leaf under cover • Position scan head • Power on CI-202 • Press “Start” • Slide scan head to measure leaf
CI-202 Use/General Points • Create a File to save measurements to • File<Create • Autosave feature • Smoothly & steadily slide the scan head • Be consistent with speed • Too Fast! warning
CI-202: Measuring Root Length • Measure length of roots • harvested, washed roots • place roots under plastic sheet on scan board • Leaf length = root length • Discontinued CI-203 Root Length tray
Competing Instrument • Styled like older CI-202
CI-203 Handheld Leaf Area Meter • Non-destructive measurement by sliding leaf under arm • More user technique involved vs. CI-202 • Be steady & consistent
CI-203 • Provides additional data beyond CI-202: • Length, width, perimeter, ratio, factor • Voids • Number of holes in leaf • GPS tagging • Latitude, longitude, altitude • Connect to satellites outside
CI-203: Additional Features • Graphic display of leaf scan • SDcard for data transfer • Does NOT take an image of the leaf • Does NOT measure diseased leaf area
How to Demonstrate the CI-203 • Pull vs. Push technique • Lift CI-203 arm • Position leaf • Draw leaf under arm • Or move CI-203 • Make roller move for length measurement
How to Navigate Menus • Use the right arrow to select a menu option • Use the left arrow to exit to the main menu • Measure Menu: • Select file with Up/Down • Press Left to exit to Main Menu • Lift arm to start measurement
Barcode Data • Scan CI-203 display with a barcode reader • Data embedded in barcode: • File name • Area • Length, width, perimeter
When to Calibrate the CI-203 • Out-of-the-ordinary measurements • Excessive aging or abuse • Setup Scanner = Calibration • Instructions to adjust width and length readings while measuring standard • CI-203 User Manual
Setup Scanner Filter • “Filter out” particles/dirt on conveyor that should not be measured as leaves • Default filter value is 200 • Objects less than ~ 0.77 mm will not be measured
Troubleshooting: Re-compute the Timing Parameters • What? • Re-computing the parameters will re-calculate the effects of any changes made on the other parameters. • When? • Whenever threshold settings are changed • if instrument is not measuring accurately • CI-202 and CI-203 • How? • At "Measure" menu, press the LEFT and RIGHT arrow keys at the same time. • What happens? • The motor should spin for about 4 seconds and then shut off. • Other? • You must always create at least 1 file before measuring with the CI-202 or CI-203.
CI-203 Conveyor • CI-203CA: • destructive, harvested leaves • external power supply • rapid measurements
Competing Instruments LI-3000 and LI-3050C from LI-COR LI-3100C from LI-COR
Leaf Area Meter Bundle • Leaf Area Meter Kit includes: • CI-202, CI-203 and CI-203CA • Special pricing & discount • With “kit” have instruments needed for all leaf types, maturity stages and sizes
Finding Customers Plant Physiologists • Leaf area following photosynthesis measurement • Leaf expansion rate affected by nutrition/stress Plant Breeders • Area of key leaves such as maize or rice flag leaf Ecologists • Leaf area consumed by insects • Root length Botanists • Morphological differences among related species Source: http://www.knowledgebank.irri.org
Conclusion • When to use: • CI-202 vs. CI-203 vs. CI-203CA • How to demonstrate a leaf area measurement • CI-203 Re-Design 2015 • suggestions/requests?
