Say what? “Scientists investigate that which already is;Engineers create that which has never been.” -Albert Einstein
What is Engineering? • Solve society’s problems • Using knowledge of the physical world • Math • Chemistry • Physics • Create, develop, and apply Technologyto our lives • Technology serves as an extension of human capability
Solving Problems • An engineer simplifies problems • Complex problems are broken down into smaller manageable problems • Create a model.
Models - Mathematics y = m x + b
Models - Physics F = ma
Models - Chemistry Chemical Reaction reactants products Zn(s) + 2 HCl (aq) ZnCl2(aq) + H2(g)
My Research • Mechanical Engineer • Focus: Thermal Design • Heat Transfer • Energy • Power Generation • Research: Solar Power • Photovoltaic Panels produce electricity • Other designs capture thermal energy • Hybrids do both
Solar: Energy in Buildings • Solar hybrids tend to have custom designs • Goal is to produce a model that can be scaled across general building structures. Source: SolarWall.com
