OBJECTIVESInterns will be able to: • Name at least 2 ways to prepare for the rotation • Describe the clinical rotation • Length of each part of the rotation • Competencies • Clinical Specialty • LTC • Access assignment guidelines and resources on the intern website and other provided intern information • State 2 tips for making this a successful rotation

How Can I Be Ready? • Read the 2 assigned pre-orientation books • Answer questions and review cases • Have your MNT texts handy • Review college MNT notes and notes from Assessment and NCP classes at orientation • Bring Nutrition andDiagnosis Related Care and Food/Medication Interactions books with you

  4. What is this rotation all about? • Basic Clinical Rotation • Length = 440 hours • Clinical 1 – 80 hours • Clinical 2 – 120 hours • Clinical 3 – 160 hours • Staff Relief – 80 hours

What is this rotation all about? • Other parts of clinical rotation: • Clinical specialty + LTC = 120 hours • Specific length your choice, depending on your interest • Minimum 40 hours in Long Term Care • 40; 80 • 60; 60 • 50; 70 • Does not need to be at Sodexo account or your clinical location

  6. Clinical Specialty • Can be part of regular clinical rotation or as a separate rotation • Can be at main clinical site or alternate site. Alternate site does not have to be a Sodexo site • separate evaluation for the clinical specialty

  7. Clinical Competencies • The Clinical Competency evaluation form used for this rotation • More supervision → more independence • Lower risk → more complex patients • Small case load → larger case load • All competencies as well as all hours must be achieved to pass the rotation

  10. GUIDELINES FORASSIGNMENTS, COMPETENCIES, & LEARNING ACTIVITIES • Complete and send assignments to the reviewer as indicated on: • Assignment checklist • Each assignment has all the instructions and forms you will need • e-mail assignments to the appropriate reviewer

Long Term Care Rotation • Chance to work in a growing field • Become familiar required federal forms • MDS 3.0 • Care plans and care planning meetings • CATs – care area triggers • CAAs – care area assessments (RAPS) • If at Sodexo accounts, become familiar with programs • Focus on long term care vs. acute care

Long Term Care Rotation • Requirements: • locate a long term care facility and RD in your area • arrange your facility early in the internship • accomplish LTC competencies as directed on the competency evaluation form • Minimum 40 hours; share 120 hours with clinical specialty • complete your assignments within 2 weeks of completing the rotation

  15. LTC Rotation Advantages • Rotation can be paced to suit your needs • an opportunity to explore LTC as a professional specialty • will improve gerontology skills • has own competency evaluation form • might also make networking connections to assist with senior community opportunities

  16. LTC Assignments • Reflective Journal--Long Term Care • Dysphagia Article • Liberalization of Diets in LTC position paper • Long Term Care Checklist – meet with MDS coordinator and food service manager • LTC case study questions

Tips for a successful rotation • Be prepared for rotation • Review all clinical information and assignments on web-site prior to start of rotation • Do your clinical case study packets during the rotation – the earlier the better; meant to supplement your learning • Complete all assignments by the deadline • CNM is primary preceptor –will usually work with multiple dietitians

  18. Tips for a successful rotation • May also be given readings or assignments by preceptors • Be prepared to read articles and texts in addition to packets • Assignments are not counted as clinical hours • Decide on PRP topic early to give yourself time to prepare

  19. Tips for a successful rotation • Be prepared with lab coat & calculator • Meet with CNM and discuss how clinical nutrition management rotation will be scheduled Do something every day!
