  2. July 4th and Democracy in the USA The democratic path of the USA violates much of what we’ve learned in class so far. How to reconcile this? --Gradualism --Changing conditions --Great (Wo)Man Theory

  3. Ways of organizing the readings: • Structural • Agent-centric • Combined approaches

  4. Inglehart & Welzel Key points: • Modernizationdemocracy (via middle class) • Social and cultural change is path-dependent • Modernization need not be “Westernization” • Values matter (industrial and post-industrial)

  5. Acemoglu & Robinson Key Points: • Many things matter; economics matter most • Politics is inherently conflictual/class-based • Institutions matter due to t and t+1 problem • Elite options (de jure and de facto power)

  6. Huber, Rueschemeyerand Stephens Three relevant “power clusters”: • Relative class power and its balance • Role of the state • Impact of transnational power structures

  7. Przeworski & Limongi Key Points: • Endogenous vs. exogenous effects • Level of economic development matters • Impact for democratization not same as for maintaining democracy • Rapid growth not destabilizing • Downturns are (potentially) destabilizing

  8. Boix and Stokes Key points: • Challenge refutation of endogenous democratization on three grounds: • Small-n problem • Sample selection • Omitted variable bias

Reuveny & Li Key points: Reuveny & Li attempt to synthesize two separate literatures (economic globalization & democratic peformance) FINDINGS: • Higher level democracy reduces inequality (use Polity III data to measure democracy) • Trade openness=greater equitability • FDI=lower equitability • Foreign capital inflows (not FDI)= no effect

  11. Boix! Again!!! Key points: • Economic development helps democratization and stabilizes democracy (the latter effect not linear) • Domestic effects of economic development are also mediated by structure of international system

Haggard & Kaufman Key points: • Examine 1980-2000, meaning 3rd wave only, using qualitative approach • Find inequality contestation (distributive-conflict model like Acemoglu & Robinson) does not apply well in 3rd wave to predict democratization • Offer alternate suggestions to account for this, including social movement theory

  13. Wood Key points: • 1) Need to disaggregate types of elites and their interests • 2) Distinct forms of mobilization threaten specific types of regimes • 3) Concrete economic interests are endogenous to trajectory of conflict
