Our Schedule • 8:20-8:30 Soft Start • 8:30-8:40 Attendance/Morning Meeting • 8:45-9:30 Art, Music, P.E. • 9:30-10:45 Math Workshop • 10:45-12:15 Literacy Workshop • 12:15-12:55 Recess & Lunch • 1:00-1:15Read Aloud • 1:15-2:00Science & Social Studies 1 • 2:00-2:45 Science & Social Studies 2 • 2:45 Wrap Up/ Clean Up/ Pack Up • 3:10 Dismissal

  3. Class Policies • We practice Positive Behavior Support • Rewards and reinforces positive behaviors • PAW TRACKS • ROAR SLIPS • ROAR Prizes & Events • R.O.A.R. Behavior Guide • Clear and consistent behavior expectations • Homework Expectations • Most weekly homework assigned Monday & due Friday • Current events study via Google Classroom • Vocabulary enrichment • Daily math homework (online and/or paper) • Daily reading (20 minutes minimum) • Band and Orchestra students must keep track of and make-up any classwork that is missed due to practice sessions

Communication • Weekly Friday Folders are used for students to take completed work home. • A weekly emailed grade-level newsletter will be sent to all parents every Friday providing updates on classroom activities and future events. • The student planner is used for organization of assignments. Please check your child’s planner to remain aware of assignments. • Please check our 5th grade website for updated information, important documents, and permission slips. • Please contact your child’s teacher for volunteer opportunities

  5. Literacy Reading • Units of Study Character study, analyzing informational texts, comparing theme across genres, & multiple perspectives. Non-fiction text features & structures, main idea, higher level comprehension • Reading Workshop: Read to Self, Listen to Reading, Responding to Reading, Word Study • Practice: Guided Reading , Reciprocal Teaching (student-led lit circles), Comprehension Skills, Goal Setting

  6. Literacy Writing • Writing Genres: Narratives - Poetry - Short Stories – Explanatory- Persuasive -Informational • Writers Workshop • Practicing the Writing Process • In fifth grade, we focus on the writing process, with an emphasis on planning, drafting, revising, & editing our work weekly. Descriptive and transitional language are year-long practices. • Teacher/Student Conferring and Goal Setting

Math • Math Workshop • An engaging & explorative environment where students challenge their skills through mini-lessons, hands-on activities, technology, and project-based learning • Math Expressions - Resource • Differentiated instruction & practice with engaging student investigations • Please look for family letters coming home with details and tips for each unit of study • Areas of Study: • Fractions with like and unlike denominators • Computation using whole numbers and decimals • Algebraic Expressions, Orders of Operations • Area & Volume • Graphing & Geometry • Use of Measurements- Standard and Metric Conversions • Data expression & interpretation • Problem Solving Strategies

  8. Social Studies • Guiding Concepts: Change over time, Human & Geographic Interaction • Changing Face of North America & the Emergence of a New World Society • The American Revolution • The United States Constitution • Personal Economics & Financial Literacy (Young Ameritowne)
