  3. “scholarly background information” - if you can’t find anything “scholarly,” choose a different topic. - a topic or an angle that would be of interest to senior management. (Hint: You might want to create a fictional company with specific interests and a specific culture.) “presented to top management” - non-scholarly research is OK, too, if it’s research that senior management would accept. (For example, you might use surveys, “popular” articles, blogs, current or recent events, interviews, or other sources of data.) “appropriate research”

  4. Target for Written Report

  5. Extrinsic Proofs

  6. Extrinsic Proofs Facts Objects Events Laws of Nature Testimony Expert (community authority) Proximate (somebody who “was there”) Data Statistics Reports https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VI1r4x1Rafc Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable. Numbers can be selectively used or ignored; they’re easy to manipulate.

  8. From ARCS, Ch 8, discussing a Supreme Court decision in which the justices agreed on the judgment, but for decidedly different reasons: “This case demonstrates that laws must be interpreted and reinterpreted – that is why we have judges” (205). “Meaning” isn’t a stable feature of the word; it can change according to context.

  9. “Credibility” isn’t a stable feature of a source; it can change according to context.

  10. Diction & Style - The words you choose & how you put them together MISSION START. The soldier loads the rifle as he heads up the ramp and off the transport vehicle. The mission is simple: kill as many people as you can. The kill counter starts ticking as body after body hits the ground. The ground turns red with fury as more and more blood is spilt. There’s a beep and a timer starts, it’s time to get back to the transport. Congratulations, the screen displays stars and ribbons and a message praises you for your valor in battle. “Jared!” Jared’s mother calls from the kitchen, “it’s time for your snack.” Jared is a six year old boy. How will such a violent video game affect him in the future? Violent video games cause increased aggressive behavior in young children. The human brain learns the most between the ages of six and ten. Research has proven that the brain makes the biggest increase in knowledge during this time period, causing this age range to be extremely important for the development of the child’s behaviors and attitudes. Psychologists report that of children that were studied males had a 24% chance of increased aggressive behavior and females 19% more chance. Studies also show that continuous exposure can cause more extensive damage. This includes extremely aggressive tendencies or behaviors and anger management issues in later years of life. In addition, these issues will reflect much of what the content of the exposure was. These similarities are becoming a common occurrence among those convicted of crimes pertaining to aggressive behaviors. Because of technology today, children can engage in video gaming in almost any way, with dozens of entertainment and computer systems. - -

  12. In today’s world or in ancient Rome, a successful and powerful country needs to have a system that has the ability to move goods and people quickly, to communicate to its citizens rapidly, and for commerce to flourish. The importance of having such a network is best illustrated by the roads built during the Roman Empire. These roads, which stretched to its furthest territories, were vital to the power and endurance of the Roman Empire. … The Romans needed the ability to quickly resupply and reinforce its armies to remain a dominant, conquering force. Recognizing the vital importance of roads for maintaining its military force, Rome built a series of roadways that could, with unparalleled swiftness, move troops and equipment. A.L. Frothingham states, in his article "Roman Architects -Part 1" that each legion had engineers and a corps of builders including stonecutters and brick masons attached to it that performed the valuable work of building and maintaining roadways (186). According to "Roman Roads: Building, Linking, and Defending the Empire," an article in Science and its Time, the engineer units built highly advanced roadways with a raised center to allow for runoff, drainage ditches on the side for travel even during spring floods, and elevated beds constructed from layers of sand, gravel, concrete, and paving stone. Rent Kurtzmenn, author of Soldier, Civilian, and Military Brick Production, states the quality and the vastness of the Roman roadway system is visible today since remnants of the Roman roads still exist, and the bricks imprinted with their legions’ numbers have been found throughout the Mideast and Europe (407). The quality of construction allowed Romans to move across wide, smooth roads as a large unit rather than in extended lines and assured that troops were resupplied throughout the year. Today, as in antiquity,

  16. Some General Principles for Diction & Style • Use the most precise word you can find – not just the right denotation, but the right connotation, the right “flavor,” and the right level of formality as well. • Remember that diction implies a relationship between you and your audience. • If you can say something with 10 words or with 15 words, use only 10. • Use parallel structures, subheadings, and graphic features to help your reader follow more easily. • Remember that your stylistic choices also imply a relationship between you and your reader.
