Brief History of Advertisements • Advertisements started to really expand in the 1880’s during industrial expansion. • Prior to World War I investigative journalism was the trend in magazines, that changed in the 1920’s people began yearning to read more then just about reforms and corruption. • After World War I magazines such as Ladies’ Home Journal, and The Saturday Evening Post began to target consumerism and advertisements started taking off in these and other publications. • Total advertising volume in the United States few from $200 million in the 1880s to about $3 Billion in 1920s. Reasons for the growth include the introduction of radio, motion pictures, and more publications.
