  1. Cigarette Smoking. Does “The Patch” help an individual quit? By: Chelsea, Steve, Nick, and Rikki

  2. Nicotine Patch vs. a Placebo • We will test to see which one is more effective. We want to see if the fake patch would be enough to stop people from smoking. • ….

  3. Placebo • Aplacebo is a treatment that in every way possible appears the same as an actual treatment, but in reality, has no effect. • The placebo in our experiment will be the fake patch without the nicotine.

  4. Blinding • The blinding is when the subjects do not know if they are receiving the treatment or the placebo. • For our experiment we will be using double blinding, where neither the subject or the doctor will know that they are receiving the placebo.

  5. Placebo Effect • A placebo effect is when the untreated subjects report an improvement in behavior or symptoms. • Our placebo would be if the patients with the fake adhesive patch report that they quit smoking.

  6. Confounding • Confounding is when a researcher is unable to distinguish between the effects of different variables. • Confounding for this experiment would be if the researcher cannot tell whether the smokers quit because of the patch of because they think they got the patch.

  7. Blocking • The blocking is when a group of subjects that are similar to each other but are different in ways that might affect the outcome of the experiment. • Blocking in our experiment would be the different genders, male and female.

  8. Replication • A replication is when an experiment is reported over and over again to see if the same results occur each time. • Replication for our experiment would be when we repeated the same tests over again on different smokers.

  9. Conclusion In recent studies the fake patch, placebo, has been proven effective and worked to prevent smokers from smoking. We have not yet tested our subjects.
