Transforming KE into Thermal/Heat Energy (HE)AND…Transfer of Heat Ms. Twardowski Science 8 Tan
Kinetic Energy • Kinetic Energy is the organized movement of particles. When the unit moves as a whole. For example, waving your hand back and forth in the same motion, over and over.
Heat Energy • Heat Energy occurs when particles move (KE) around ‘randomly’ in all directions. If you add up ALL this KE, this is how much “Heat” is generated.
Transforming KE into HE In this lab, we will attempt to make smoke! Materials: • Wooden dowel (stick) • Different types of string.
Red = No/FalseGreen = Yes/True Heat Energy is the RANDOM movement of particles.
What’s your best guess?... • Talk to your group. • Which FORCE do you think will help transform the KE into HE? • Write your answer on the whiteboard.
Forces that help transfer energy • Collision • Sliding Friction • Gravity
Lab #7: Smoke Signals • In this lab, you will use ‘sliding friction’ to attempt to create smoke! • Rules/expectations. • Any questions???
Lab #8: Hot Finger/Cold Finger • In the next lab, you will be experimenting with the Transfer of Heat.
Transfer of Heat • Heat is transferred in THREE ways: • C__________ • C__________ • R__________
Conduction Conduction is the transfer of heat within a substance, particle by particle. If you put one end of a metal rod over a fire, that end will absorb the energy from the flame (this is radiation transferring energy). The particles at this end of the rod will gain energy and begin to vibrate faster. As they do their temperature increases and they begin to bump into the particles next to them. The heat is being transferred from the warm end to the cold end.
Convection • Convection is heat transfer in liquids or gases. This occurs naturally in our atmosphere.
Red = No/FalseGreen = Yes/True Conduction is the transfer of heat through a liquid or gas.
Radiation • Radiation allows heat to be transferred through wave energy. These waves are called Electromagnetic Waves, because the energy travels in a combination of electric and magnetic waves. This energy is released when these waves are absorbed by an object. For example, energy traveling from the sun to your skin, you can feel your skin getting warmer as energy is absorbed.
REMEMBER! • During radiation, Heat Energy can be transferred through empty space (no particles) if it needs to. HOWEVER, the object that the Heat Energy hits does NOT “heat up” until the particles of the object “absorb” the radiation and transform the KE into HE. • (Ex. This is why Outer Space is cold even though there are millions of stars emitting radiation out there!)
Red = No/FalseGreen = Yes/True Conduction is when heat is transferred through a solid.
Red = No/FalseGreen = Yes/True Radiation can be transferred through empty space, without particles.
