Writing 521 Article of the Week Introduction
AOW: Kelly Gallagher’s Model • “Part of the reason my students have such a hard time reading is because they bring little prior knowledge and background to the written page. They can decode the words, but the words remain meaningless without a foundation of knowledge.”
AOW: Kelly Gallagher’s Model • “To help build my students’ prior knowledge, I assign them an "Article of the Week" every Monday morning. By the end of the school year I want them to have read 35 to 40 articles about what is going on in the world. It is not enough to simply teach my students to recognize theme in a given novel; if my students are to become literate, they must broaden their reading experiences into real-world text.”
Writing 521 Article of the Week • Roughly once a week (typically each Monday), you will be given a new Article of the Week. You have 4 days to complete and submit your responses (due on Thursdays). • Responses are assessed using a 6-point scale: • Level 1: Beginning • Level 2: Emerging • Level 3: Developing • Level 4: Capable • Level 5: Experienced • Level 6: Exceptional
Expectations • Responses must be in MLA format, double spaced • Roughly 500 words in length • Must be handed in at the beginning of class on due date with rubric attached • Talk about any areas of confusion in the article and explain how you overcame that • Include your final thoughts on the article • Don’t forget to carefully proofread and edit before submitting
