The South Fights Back • Conservatives • White southerners who did not want change in the South. • Willing to let African Americans vote and hold a few offices. • Most were Democrats.
Sharecroppers • Farmed land for rich landowners. • Sharecroppers would receive seed, fertilizer and tools of the landowner. • In exchange, sharecroppers would give the landowner a part of the harvest.
Cycle of Poverty • When the sharecroppers would farm the land of the plantation owners. • Each year the sharecropper would fall into debt. • Eventually, the sharecroppers would fall so far into debt they could never leave. • “Legal form of slavery”
The Challenge of Rebuilding: • Despite political problems, Reconstruction governments tried to rebuild the South. • Built schools for both whites and blacks. • Gave women the right to own property. • Rebuilt railroads, telegraph lines, bridges, and roads.
Ku Klux Klan • Conservatives formed secret societies designed to help them regain power • K K K was designed to keep blacksand white Republicans out of office
