  1. History Day Hullabaloo: Partnering for Student Success Maureen L. Hartman K-12 Partnerships Coordinator Hennepin County Library

  2. About National History Day The goal of National History Day is to promote the study of history by engaging students and teachers in the excitement of historical inquiry and creative presentation. Find more at: http://www.nationalhistoryday.org/

  3. More than 700,000 students in grades 6-12 participated nationwide in 2009

  4. Last year over 25,000 students in Minnesota participated in National History Day

  5. About Hennepin County Library • 41 libraries in city of Minneapolis, MN and suburbs • One Central Library, with a separate Special Collections Department—both a Government Documents and Federal Patent Depository

  6. Library Challenge • Youth, parents and teachers were using library resources, but we weren’t able to measure it well • Usage was sporadic and difficult to staff appropriately • Library staff had limited knowledge of the History Day programs or projects

  7. Minnesota Historical Society Challenge • Minnesota History Day staff committed to program succeeding in urban districts • Wilson Library (U of MN) and Historical Society Libraries were not accessible or approachable for these students

  8. Our solution: History Day Hullabaloo!

  9. On four separate dates, students came to the library to get personalized help from History Day staff, University of Minnesota mentors, librarians and volunteers

  10. During the day students had access to… • History Day staff who led classes throughout the day on creating their project • Mentors from the University of Minnesota who helped students define – and refine – their ideas and theses • Librarians who helped students find specific material both online and in the library • Additional staffing in Special Collections to help with specialized resources • Volunteers and Library School interns who helped direct students and triage reference questions

  11. Approximately 300 students participatedin both2008 and 2009!

  12. One of Our Favorite Library Researched Projects

  13. Hullabaloo 2009: staff support • New web page with resources for staffand customers • Staff training via webinar and additional resources online

  14. Promotion • In 2008 all promotion was done by History Day staff to students and teachers directly within the schools • In 2009, events were included in library catalog but vast majority of participants reported hearing about the event from their teacher or mentor

  15. Budget and Future Plans • 2009 budget just under $1,200 in direct costs to the library. Majority of funding was for substitutes to cover staff working on project • 2010 plans include additional support for staff throughout the system and adding an additional “Hullabaloo” to help students select their topic

  16. Secrets of Our Success • Avoid the schools directly; partner with another organization/institution already working closely with the schools • Staff buy-in—History Day projects were a passion of several staff members long before the Hullabaloos. They sold it to the rest of the staff • Promotion within the schools was HUGE
