  2. Issue • Young models dying to be skinny. • Must be addressed because there are too many girls becoming ridiculously skinny.

  3. Personal Connection • Caitlyn’s family friend was affected her senior year in high school. She weighed about 90 pounds at 5’8. She was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa and was sent to a rehabilitation center. She was treated with psychological help and was released after a couple months. It affected her family, friends and especially her health. As of now she is doing fine weighing at 137 pounds.

  4. Community • Most teenage girls in high school feel their body is not up to par with the super models displayed in magazines. • Girls are constantly trying to lose weight even if they are not diagnosed with an eating disorder. • Bad publicity for the community because they are not doing anything to prevent the damage girls are doing to themselves.

  5. Position/Solution • That modeling agencies should require models to have a Body Mass Index of at least 18. • Girls will then see that they do not have to look super skinny to feel good about themselves and look good.

  6. Support & Evidence • Organizers of Madrid’s Pasarela Cibeles showed that they have rejected 5 out of 69 models for failing to have a BMI of 18. • “Girls and young women are looking at magazines trying to copy their rail-thin looks and developing eating disorders” --CNN World • “Fears that some girls are developing eating disorders because of their work in the industry, fashion experts have recommended” --CNN World • “The thin models that we have seen on the catwalks have been a cause of the increase in this illness which has also caused numerous deaths.” --CNN World

  7. Form of Legislation • Format the issue into a bill addressing the problem and how it has created a major impact on young girls. • A law needs to be made to end the display of grossly skinny models because of the influence they bring to the unhealthy habits girls are practicing.

  8. Why our solution is reasonable • Agencies will not be allowed to show underweight models . • Girls will see and understand that models do not need to be stick thin. • Girls will get a better self image of themselves and learn that forcing their bodies to become extremely skinny is unhealthy.

  9. Addressed to: • 230 South Dearborn #3900, Chicago, IL - (312) 886-3506 –Senator Mark Kirk • The Honorable Dick DurbinUnited States Senate711 Hart Senate Office BuildingWashington, D.C. 20510-1304 –Senator Dick Durbin • 350 Madison Ave(between 44th St & 45th St) New York, NY 10017Neighborhood: Midtown East –Vogue Magazine

  10. Process of Sending • Put power point on a flash drive and mail the project to both Senators and Vogue Magazine. • Also mail them the bill proposing for a change to be made in the fashion industry.

  11. Thank You For Your Time! • We hope that everyone has thought about everything and spreads the word on this issue. There are many people around you that could be affected by it. Hopefully the bill will follow through and be of major help.
