  1. Principles Of Videography

  2. Sampling Rate • Low 1 – 30 Frames per second • High 30 – 2000 FPS • Human eye can perceive roughly 30 FPS • For our purposes, 30 FPS is adequate.

  3. Focal Length • Based on light rays that enter lens on parallel paths • Lens bends the rays to a point where they produce a sharp image • This is the focal point… The distance from the middle of the lens to the focal point is the focal length.

  4. Focal Length • We want image size to be as large as possible relative to frame, best achieved by a long focal length.

  5. Image Size • In general, we want our image size to be 2/3 of the frame size.

  6. Perspective Error • Distortion due to parts of the body being outside the plane being recorded • Can be minimized by placing the camera as far back as possible (increasing the focal length)

  7. Depth of Field • How much foreground and background is in focus • Tradeoff between short FL and depth of field.

  8. Shutter Speeds • Determines the length of time light has to go through and expose to the film/tape. • A very fast shutter speed will freeze a faster moving object. • Smaller exposure time = sharper image. • Use high speed – need good light.

  9. Camera Position • Tripod is ideal • Should be level • Perpendicular to plane of movement being analyzed

  10. Camera Position

  11. Filming Environment

  12. 2711 Video Procedures • Ideal = Access to your own camera • Other option = KIN Dept. camera • must be supervised • on campus • Time limitations

  13. Remember… Critical features and Deterministic Model need to be done before filming! • Deterministic Model due March 13
