  1. Syllabus Highlights Fall 2014

  2. Full syllabus is on myCourses! Exams (3 hourly – drop one) : 200 points Final Exam 100 points In-class/Recitation50 points Homework 50 points Total available points: 400 points

  3. Attendance/in-class + Recitations Attendance will be gauged by in-class assignments that will be collected. The ONLY way to get credit for these assignments is to be in class and hand them in UNLESS: • You have a conflict and arrange PRIOR to class with me to make it up. • There is a medical/family emergency. Then we’ll negotiate.

  4. Bonus Points! Homework 50 points In-class/Recitation 50 points There are built-in bonus assignments. On the homework, the “pre-class” problems are all bonus. You also get bonus points for answering optional questions, etc. There will be extra points on the in-class assignments as well, to make up for any absences you might have.

  5. Full syllabus is on myCourses! ONLINE HOMEWORK! ONLINE HOMEWORK! This is 50 points. Again, it is possible to get over 50 points – “pre-class” assignments are strictly BONUS! Instructions for registering for www.masteringchemistry.com are on myCourses under “Content”

  6. Full syllabus is on myCourses! ONLINE HOMEWORK! ONLINE HOMEWORK! Again, your ID should be your RIT email address without the extension. Please use your RIT email address even if it isn’t your favorite. myCourses doesn’t recognize your other email address. The “CourseID” is “RIT2014CHMG141”. My name is Lanzafame! 

  7. WT? is a “recitation” The “recitation” is that other hour on your schedule that is NOT on MWF. It is one hour per week of strictly problem solving and writing assignments. NO NEW MATERIAL will be presented there unless relevant to the problem sets. [Except maybe this week.] It is GROUP work, a chance to get some practice with the concepts we learn!

  8. Cheating This is the conversation none of us like to have. What is NOT cheating: • Working together on homework assignments • Working together on recitation problems • Using the internet to work on homework or recitation problems

  9. Cheating This is the conversation none of us like to have. What IS cheating: • Looking on other people’s papers during exams • Using the internet/cell phone to work on exams • Programming answers into your graphing calculator • Putting your absent friend’s name on your in-class or recitation worksheet.

  10. LAB! LAB! LAB! Lab is a COMPLETELY separate course. Separate grade Separate instructor I can answer content questions about CHMG 145 lab: how to calculate something, why something behaves the way it does. But questions about what goes on in the laboratory (due dates, lab formats, excused absences) should be discussed with your TA.

  11. MEET YOUR LAs! Stephanie Beach Charles Ayotte What’s an LA, you ask? An LA is a “Learning Assistant”. Their job is to work with you to help you learn to solve chemistry problems

  12. The LA role in here There’s 160 of you and ONE of me! Working in-class problems would end up being more of a quiz and less of a learning experience if you couldn’t ask me questions. To improve the odds of getting you help, the LAs will be available to help during in-class problem sessions. The LAs will also be providing some outside of class help.

  13. LA-in-training Our 1st math problem: 1- me + 2-LAs = 3 people Still too many students! Take out a pencil, we’re going to have a test and make cuts!

  14. LA-in-training Kidding! The good news is: some of you don’t need me at all! In fact, some of you could gain more from helping each other than doing the in-class problems. I will deputize a few of you as “LA-in-training”. Instead of doing the worksheets, you’ll help others do the worksheet. Volunteers will be taken!

  15. SI! SI! SI! Meet…. Your SI leader! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tod8nLCHonE
