  1. ANATTA There is no self in Buddhism. We are just an ever-changing combination of the 5 Skandhas (sanskrit); upadana khandha (pali). These are:- 1. Body – rupa 2. Sensation – vedana 3. Perception – sanna 4. Mental phenomena – sankhara 5. Consciousness - vinnana

  2. ANATTA • Body – The physical frame of us comprising the 4 great elements:- • Solidity • Fluidity • Heat • Motion

  3. ANATTA • Sensations – These can be picked up in six ways:- • Eye – visible • Ear – sounds • Nose – odour • Tongue – taste • Body – tangible objects • Mind – thoughts and ideas

  4. ANATTA • Perceptions – when we pick up these sensations, we recognise whether objects are physical or mental • These then produce reactions in us

  5. ANATTA • Mental phenomena – sometimes called ‘formations by Buddhists mean that all volitional acts, both good and bad, result in Kamma (Karma) • These might include our notions, longings, ideals and moods • In Buddhism, it is said there are 52 mental activities all producing Kamma

  6. ANATTA • Consciousness – This is the accumulative element which collects the mental formations and is influenced or created by them. • This is the main connecting link to Rebirth
