Alcohol use doubles from 8th to 12th grade 8th graders aren’t in to meth & hallucinogens Instead, 11% are using inhalants RX Drug use is rampant Ecstasy is back on the scene High alcohol, cigarettes, inhalants & Rx: they are targeting what is available, easy to get and cheaper. AYS ‘10 SFUSD Good & Bad News

  7. Alcohol Abuse RatesWhy does this happen? • Social & parental acceptance/culture of legal drug abuse • Low perception danger/harm/risk • Lowering age for gateway use, ±12 • Peers & community • Availability

Medical Marijuana:How will it affect us? • Minors can be medical marijuana cardholders with 2 recommendations & parental permission • Schools can not discriminate against card holders for admission or employment • Cardholders can come to school, work under the influence of medical marijuana • Cardholders can not be prosecuted for having metabolites in the body while in class or at work • Minor users can use during the school day, 500 yards off campus without penalty • Cardholders entitled to 5 oz/mo ±400 joints • Marijuana already is #2 behind alcohol and cigarette use by 8th graders—wait until AYS 2012!!! • Exposure to other children, bus drivers • Schools need to follow federal Drug Free School rules

Marijuana Use Set to Rise(as if 24.2% use among 12th graders isn’t bad enough) • Medical Marijuana Use in effect this spring • Perception of danger already reducing • Children can get card with parental permission & 2 doctors • Schools have to admit MM cardholders • Greater exposure of kids to marijuana
