  3. Course Synopsis • This course introduces the basic knowledge of metrology, measurement standards and tolerance in measurement. • The students will be exposed to metrology equipment as vernier calliper, micrometer, profile projector, gage block, coordinate measuring machine (CMM) and surface roughness tester. • It covers measurement techniques for reference plane, angle measurement and surface measurement. • Practical work will help students to gain effective understanding.

  4. Course Outcomes • CO1: Ability to describe the metrology principles and techniques. • CO2: Ability to identify suitable measurement techniques for various applications. • CO3: Ability to utilise metrology instruments in measurement engineering tools/product.

  5. Teaching Plan CHAPTER 1: Introduction to Metrology and Quality DEFINE and DESCRIBE the metrology, measurement, and quality. EXPLAIN the uses and application of measurement, product quality, the need for quality and inspection.

  6. Teaching Plan (cont’) CHAPTER 2: Language and System of Measurement. DEFINE and DESCRIBE a line of measurement, the terms precision, accuracy and reliability. EXPLAIN English and metric system. CHAPTER 3: Measurement and Tolerances DEFINE and DESCRIBE tolerance as it applies to metrology. EXPLAIN and ILLUSTRATE various basic symbols used in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.

  7. Teaching Plan (cont’) CHAPTER 4: Measurement Instruments DEFINE and DESCRIBEvernier calliper, micrometer and profile projector. Application of vernier calliper, micrometer and profile projector. CHAPTER 5: Use of Gage Block DEFINE, DESCRIBE and ILLUSTRATE the types of gage block. EXPLAIN the gage block applications and the combining of gage block.

  8. Teaching Plan (cont’) CHAPTER 6: Reference Plane DEFINE flatness and perpendicularity. DESCRIBE the importance of flatness. EXPLAIN and ILLUSTRATE modern reference plane and flatness evaluation. CHAPTER 7: Angle Measurement DESCRIBE the importance of circle in metrology and its relationship to angle measurement, the role of squares and the role of levels. EXPLAIN and ILLUSTRATE the angle measurement and the role of sine bars and plates.

  9. Teaching Plan (cont’) CHAPTER 8: Surface Measurement DEFINE and DESCRIBE surface metrology. EXPLAIN and ILLUSTRATE surface evaluation, surface roughness and waviness. CHAPTER 9: Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) DEFINE and DESCRIBECMM. EXPLAIN the types, the role, modes of operation and application of CMM.

  10. Integrated Project • Students are required to complete a project that integrated with certain courses; PDT101, PDT106, PDT109, PDT110. • 4 persons per group • Have presentation and must submit a full report. • Project’s title: Project’s title: Students are required to Analyze, Design, Measure and Fabricatea TELEVISION MOUNTING BRACKET.
