Step 1 • listening and reading • sentence by sentence • translation • repeat (out loud) • Step 2 • as Step 1, but without pauses
Step 3 • listening without reading • sentence by sentence • listen and repeat (out loud)! • 5, 6, 7, … times until you understand and can repeat everything easily • Step 4 • as step 3, but without pauses
Step 5: test • Afterhaving studied the text! • Did I study the text properly? • Listening & writing • 80% correct • < 80% go back to step 1 – 3
Step 6 • After having studied the text! • Gap fill exercise + feedback • Same exercise as in book

Some good advice • Do not fill in the gaps in the book • Do not write translations inthe text • Do not copy the text • Understanding is not enough: have attention for form: put the text under the microscope! • Use all senses simultaneously: read + listen + speak • Study actively: USE the words, make your own sentences • Don’t be afraid to speak or to make mistakes

Paper tests and assignments • 1-4 (depending on course) gap fill tests on paper • during first 10 minutes of classes • Sentences from the book with gaps • 20 gaps from 4 randomly selected texts • 1-4 writing assignments • About the topic of the text • make new Dutch sentences with the words that you have learned
The final test • Test format: • The final test is ___ textwith blanks. You have ___ fill in the missing word. Allsentences are from ___ textbook. • Minimum result: 75% correct words.
