Do Now – 7 minutes • Look back at your notes from Friday. Why did the Puritans decide to come to the Americas? Do you think they had a good reason? Why or why not? • Last week, we discussed Roger Williams, who said that the Puritans should take the Indians’ land, but should pay them for it. Do you agree with Williams? Why or why not?

The Impact of Smallpox • Smallpox epidemic killed off many Indians • Had no tolerance built up • “Without this remarkable and terrible stroke of God upon the natives, we would have with much more difficulty have found room, and at a far greater charge have obtained and purchased the land.” • Smallpox severely weakened the Indians • Made some convert, or give up hope
Pequot War • In 1636, Puritans accuse Pequots of murdering an English trader. • Puritans and Pequots burn eachothers’ villages. • Rival tribes helped the Puritans. • By 1638, Pequot nation is wiped out.
“Praying Towns” • Puritans want to convert the Indians • Indians wanted a way to survive • Puritans created 14 “praying towns” • Wore traditional English clothing • Gave up hunting, and farmed instead • Women stayed in the house
King Phillip’s War • Metacom • son of Massasoit • educated by the Puritans • Called King Phillip by the Puritans • Puritans forced Metacom to give up all his tribes’ land • Metacom ended his alliance with Puritans
King Philip’s War • Indians started off strong • Used English weapons • Destroyed 12 Puritan towns • Indians ran out of ammunition • Puritans destroyed Indian crops
King Phillip’s War • Metacom asked Iroquois Confederacy for help • But Iroquois wanted to be dominant Indian nation • Joined the Puritans to defeat Metacom • KillledMetacom in 1676 • Puritans sold his wife and children into slavery • Bloodiest war in American history (per capita)
Individual Work – 10 mins • Divide class into 1’s and 2’s • 1’s: You are a Puritan. Write a persuasive letter to the Native Americans explaining why they should give up their land. • 2’s: You are a Native American. Write a persuasive letter to the Puritans explaining why they should stop trying to take you land. • Use your notes and think of what the group you are writing to might want/need. How could you get them to give up?
Create a Skit – 20 minutes • Partner with someone who was a different number. • Read your letters to each other. • Create a skit debating your points about what should happen to the land. • Use details from the notes (Praying towns, illnesses, war, etc). • Each character must have at least 7 lines.
Presentation of Skits – 15 mins • Presentations!!!
