Course Title (1): BAE 451&2 Engineering Design I • Combined course, with biomedical engineers, agricultural engineers, environmental engineers, bioprocess engineers • Teams • 2 semester sequence • Semester Projects • Emphasis on team skills, communication, professionalism, project management, ethics

  3. Describe particularly novel and/or effective methods you use to teach innovation & entrepreneurship • Prep for team forming: identify individual project interests, individual technical and teaming skills • Projects from outside clients • Budgeting skills • Quad charts

  4. How do you measure outcomes? • Objectives: communicate effectively with diverse audiences; able to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams; develop professional, ethical, & societal responsibility • Outcomes: presentations to bio-industry, health care, and faculty professionals evaluated by faculty-designed rubric; client feedback; Team Developer (McGourty:Wiley)

Describe a course project or exercise that exemplifies “best practices” Project: An Upper Body Weight Training System with Motivation Mechanism for Children with Developmental Disabilities: Pingko • Regular and frequent consultation with client/potential users • Cohesive team function • Developed understanding of broader problem

(Example Results QuadChart – adapted from Students’ Report) An Upper Body Weight Training System with Motivation Mechanism for Children with Developmental Disabilities: Pingko Team Members: Jaci Harrell Kevin Monk Julie Poore Lindsay Sallach Stephanie Southard Client: The Charlie Gaddy Center Raleigh, NC • Approach: • Defined problem- wheel chair accessible, lightweight, address short attention span, encourage, simple motion • Plan: simple lift resistance, “ping pong plinko” linked for attention-getting • Results: • 5’x3’x2’ al. frame, portable • rubber/torsion system • provides exercise for upper body in a goal-oriented setting that captures child’s attention
