  1. Research experience and mentoring for career development Mission: This NSF funded Research Experience and Mentoring (REM) program aims to broaden participation of underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields by providing research experience and career development workshops. Program activities: Three REM participants will be supported to do research at Syracuse University in summer 2014 on the project titled “Deciphering and Controlling the Signaling Processes in Bacterial Multicellular Systems and Bacteria-Host Interactions”. Participants will have opportunities to lean knowledge and skills of nanotechnology, microbiology, immunology, molecular simulation and systems biology. In addition to research, participants will also attend workshops and social activities planned to promote career development. This project will also sponsor up to 4 science projects with students at participants’ home high schools during the 2014-2015 academic year. The participating teachers are expected to help select and supervise some of the projects for competitions, such as the science fairs. Some percipients will also be supported to attend a grantee conference in March, 2015 in Washington, DC. Eligibility: Women, minorities, veterans, and individuals with disabilities that are U.S. citizens or permanent residents are encouraged to apply.
