L'AQUILA, Italy The 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck L'Aquila, in the Abruzzo region, at 3:32 a.m. on April 6, wrecking tens of thousands of buildings, injuring more than 1,000 people and killing 308. (Sisto, Italian scientists convicted over earthquake warning, 2009)
Why did this earthquake cause so much damage? The buildings in Italy are so old. Most are made with clay. They couldn’t hold up to a quake of 6.3 magnitude. A 6.3 earthquake in some other country probably wouldn’t have cause as much damage as this one did in L’Aguila.
Six scientists and a government official were sentenced to six years in prison for manslaughter by an Italian court • According to government officials there were little quakes before the big one happened. • The scientist should have communicated better to the community and had them evacuate. (according to the judge)
Prevention • Updating Building Codes • Better building material “re-bar” • Educating people on earth quake safety

It was never about whether the scientists could or could not predict earthquakes. Even the leader of the 309 Martiri who pressed for the case to be brought said so; Dr. Vincenzo Vittorini, who lost his wife and daughter in the quake, said back when the trial began “Nobody here wants to put science in the dock. We all know that the earthquake could not be predicted, and that evacuation was not an option. Like a Domino effect!!! (The L’Aquila Verdict: A Judgment Not against Science, but against a Failure of Science Communication, 2012)
What do you think? Crazy! OMG! In my personal opinion only god knows what’s going to happen in the future. How can we put innocent people behind bars for lack of communication. However, there are some individuals that get away with murder, when there's plenty of evidence. It doesn’t make sense! Casey Anthony changed her story multiple times….WHAT? What’s wrong here!!! Found NOT Guilty for killing her 3yr daughter 7 people charged with manslaughter for NOT predicting earthquake!
Evidence shows… • In the days immediately following the quake, the New York Times points out, most of the blame for the devastation was unenforced building codes, rather than scientists who failed to predict an event it is impossible to predict. • The convicted men plan to appeal the decision.
