  3. REDIFINING THE FAMILY VS. • Many Marriages did take place once soldiers returned from war • HOWEVER women tended to divorce due to their new found independence when husbands were away..By the end of 1950s about 1 million marriages ended in divorces

TRUMAN • PRESIDENT 1945-1952“THE BUCK STOPS HERE!” • APPROVED USE OF ATOMIC BOMB ON JAPAN • ECONOMIC PROBLEMS TRUMAN HAD TO WORK WITH A REBUBLICAN CONGRESS • FIRST PRESIDENT TO LOOK AT CIVIL RIGHTS • DEMOCRATIC PARTY SPLIT OVEDR CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUE • TRUMANS FAIR DEAL PROGRAM = RAISED MIIMUM WAGE • EXTENDED SOCIAL SECURITY, LOW INCOME HOUSING

  6. THE AMERICAN DREAM VALUES= conformity , material goods, 2-3 children, close family ties, single family homes in SUBURBIA, 1-2 cars, TV WORK= man is the breadwinner$$$ at a white collared job (office job), Women stayed home, took care of children & home
