Extending and Refining: Connections Projects Everyone will find and introduce at least one connection from the literature, theme, historical reference or philosophy being studied in class with a piece of the world around us.
Why do we have to do it? • THE most important part of learning is the ability to “synthesize” what you have learned and recognize its relevance within the world around you. • If you aren’t going to see the truths you read about in here in the life you go out and lead, what really is the purpose of all this anyway? • Finding these connections with what we do in here, shows us all that the purpose lies in the thread that connects all art, all words, all ideas, all feeling, all people together.
Directions: • Each of you must provide one example of a concept covered in another aspect of our society. (I’ll give examples of where to look in a bit) • When you get an idea, you need to talk with me about it to get approval, sign up the date you wish to introduce it, and post your idea on the chart. You must present at LEAST one, but you may do more than one for extra credit.
Some of the concepts you can explore/ look for but are not limited by only these… • Archetypes • Carl Jung • The heroes journey • Gilgamesh • Iliad • Odyssey • Mythology • Dante’s Inferno • Allegories • Interpreting dreams • Freud • Hamlet • Lord of the flies • The Buddha
Where you can find illustrations/allusions/ examples of…. • TV show • YouTube • Movie/ movie clip/ trailer • Visual art (painting, photo, etc..) • Song (lyrics or video) • Current event (newspaper article/ news clip) • Commercial or magazine ad • Celebrity news/ dirt
When you find your example… • Bring it into class • A written explanation of the connection on a large index card. • Be ready to defend or explain your connection with the class or me. (: • This should be fun! Make it fun for all of us!!! • A note: the highest form of displaying understanding is to TEACH it…you are all teachers in this class. • I look forward to learning from YOU!!!
With the image, you must put your explanation on a note card! • “Each character represents the qualities of each sin from the 7 deadly sins. • Plankton represents ENVY because….” • Your explanation is the MOST important part!!!!
On notecard… • “in the images found on Bosch’s painting, you find examples of Dante’s image of Hell. • In the right corner, the image of the….”
